ABSTRACT
Cerebrospinal
meningitis is a significant public health concern in Nigeria particularly in
rural communities like Dunari, understanding public perception on cerebrospinal
meningitis causes is crucial for effective prevention and control, key
strategies involve in the identification and prevention of CSM. Health
education programs and awareness is very crucial in addressing the
misconceptions of peoples in Dunari community on the cause’s cerebrospinal
meningitis. The study sought to; a) identify common perceptions and beliefs
about the causes of cerebrospinal meningitis within Dunari community, b) determined
the extent to which scientific knowledge about CSM align with or diverges from
community perceptions, c) inform the development of culturally appropriate
public health interventions and educational materials, d) contribute to a
better understanding of the social and cultural factors that influence health
seeking behaviors related to Cerebrospinal meningitis. The research work shows
that bacterial infection (Neisseria meningitis) and streptococcus pneumonia are
most common cause of cerebrospinal meningitis infection while socio cultural
factors has influenced the progress of the disease. The researcher recommended
that there should be an increment in the health facilities and creation of
awareness about the importance of immunization services in Dunari community.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Cerebrospinal
meningitis (CSM) is a serious infection of the membranes, surrounding the brain
and the spinal cord, potentially leading to complications or even death. Its
cause by bacteria called Neisseria, meningitis, the disease develops very
quickly. A child or adult can see perfectly healthy and then few hours became
extremely ill with the disease because of the presentation of the disease, is
in extreme point within a short, period of time or the condition. This disease occurs
worldwide with the explosive epidemic periodically in tropical Africa of
November and April. People infected with this disease most of them recovered
from the disease some left deaf of overcrowding. Ventilation is essential in
the minimizing of the infection of cerebrospinal meningitis among people of the
community.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Cerebrospinal
meningitis (CSM) is a serious infection that inflames, the protective membranes
(meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord, the problem associated with
cerebrospinal meningitis among people of Dunari Community include: High
morbidity and mortality cerebrospinal meningitis can cause severe illness,
disability and even death especially when left untreated or under treated.
Neurological Damage: The infection can lead to long term, neurological
complications, such as hearing loss, cognitive impairment and seizures.
Surveillance
and detection: Weak surveillance systems can hinder early detection and
response to outbreak. Social disruption outbreak can lead to social distancing school
closures and other measures that disrupt daily life and economic activity.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
1. To
determine the level of the knowledge that Dunari community have about
cerebrospinal meningitis.
2. To
assessed the level of awareness on cerebrospinal meningitis among people of Dunari
community.
3. To
assessed the factors that hindered the acceptance, of cerebrospinal vaccine in
Dunari community Mallam Madori Local Government.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
i.
Do you have knowledge about
cerebrospinal meningitis?
ii.
Are you aware about the prevention
and control method of cerebrospinal meningitis?
iii.
What factors hinders the acceptance
of cerebrospinal vaccine in Dunari community Mallam Madori Local Government?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
·
The study is important to people of Dunari
community, Mallam Madori Local Government Area Jigawa State by encouraging
lighting them to understand the clear information of the community and their
common disease.
·
It makes the people of the community to be
alert about infected people by visiting the clinic and hospital for early
diagnosis and treatment.
·
It also gives bases for receiving related
literature.
1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The
scope of the study is concerned with assessment of public perception on the
causes of cerebrospinal meningitis, this research is mainly limited to the
occurrence of the disease in the area. Dunari is a small community located in
Mallam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State Nigeria. Dunari is situated
north west of Mallam Madori town and serve as the headquarters of the Dunari
Ward, one of eleven, wards in the Mallam Madori Local Government Area. Dunari
has a population of approximately 10,876 people, accounting for about 606% of
the total population of Mallam Madori Local Government Area which is around 164,791
people. Longitude 9.8902O or 9O53’25 east. Latitude
12.5986O or 12O35’55 north. Dunari is situated near by to
the locality Mallam Madori as well as near Dargazawa. Mallam Madori 4km south. Daugazawa
5km north. Matara 6km east and Dakido 10km south.
