CHAPTER ONE

1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Prophet Muh’d states in one of his traditions that “the best man among you is the one who learns the Quran and then cares to teach it”. This hadith together with a number of verses from Holy Quran which emphasise the importance of knowledge and the need to spread it have made the Islamic scholars worldwide and Ilorin in particular to rise to this occasion. Hence, the establishment of Arabic and Islamic institutions.

In Islamic schools, Arabic is studied because it is the language of Quran and therefore has great spiritual value. Indeed, the history of the teaching of Arabic throughout the Islamic world, but particularly in the non-Arab world, has been the history of the spread of Islam. This is one of the reasons why the elementary Arabic schools in Nigeria are called Quranic schools, and both Arabic and Islam are taught simultaneously.

In Nigeria, a significant segment of the population accepts Islam as a faith and tends to abide by its principles. Meanwhile, certain “Machineries” have to be put in place in order to make Muslims acquainted with those Islamic principles. In the light of this, there is the need for the establishment of Islamic institutions. But, before Arabic and Islamic institution which provides Islamic education is discussed, it has to be emphasized that Islamic education is discussed, it has to be emphasized that Islam is not just a creed but a comprehensive way of life. Hence, it is concerned with the moral, intellectual, spiritual, social and economic welfare of mankind.

With particular references to the educational development of man, Islam enjoins its adherents to read and always seek for more and more knowledge (Quran 96:1-5, 20:114, 55:33). What distinguishes Islam from other systems of faith is the special emphasis it places on seeking knowledge in the name of the almighty Allah who has not only created man but has also taught him what he knew not (Q 96:1-5). Basically, it could be observed that the basic knowledge of Islam could only be acquired by going to the Islamic schools. In view of this, Islamic scholars in Ilorin resorted to the establishment of Islamic schools.

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The problem encountered on the field work varied. Among which is that, my informants usually rebooked another time of interview for me. And, when I go there, I don’t always meet them. In the same vein, they would be respondent who is believed to have the information had to refer to another person on the account of having no time. Another problem is that, it is painstaking to find competent interpreters of the Arabic texts or materials used in this work.

Despite all these problems encountered by the researcher during the field work, necessary materials needed for the making and writing of this essay were gathered and thoroughly gone through carefully and objectively interpreted before committing them to writing.

1.3     AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This work is an attempt to give the general survey of the nature of Arabic and Islamic institutions in Ilorin and in particular with reference to Markas Tahlim-Arobiya Oke Agodi. However, the origin, structure, objectives, contributions of the Madrasah (school) to the society and the challenges confronted would be examined.

It should be brought to discussion the forms and the nature which Arabic and Islamic institutions were and the type of education provided before the present ones are established. Also to be examined is the changes which have been brought by these ‘modern’ day Islamic institutions and their impact noticed on the people of Ilorin community. Above all, the roles played by the founder of this school with respect to the nurturing of the school would be examined.

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The essence of this work is to compare and contrast between the old system of learning Arabic in Arabic schools and the new system especially in Ilorin Emirates Council.

Also to bring to the notice of the people the impacts that Markaz Tailimil-Arabiy Oke Agodi Ilorin had made to the spreading of Arabic and Islam in Ilorin Emirate Council.

1.5     METHODOLOGY

The method used in collecting data for this essay was through library materials where the researcher acquainted himself with secondary sources. Meanwhile, few materials available for this work are Arabic texts. Invariably, the use of interpreter is inevitable.

On the field work, information were sourced through the interview, conducted with the people who are directly connected with the school. That is, the principal, the staff, the students and also the people in the society.

1.6     SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
