1.0 Executive Summary
1.1 Business Overview
Evergreen Snail Farms is a proposed agro-venture specializing in the
breeding, rearing, and distribution of edible snails in Nigeria. Located in the
fertile agricultural zone of Ibadan, Oyo State, the farm will focus on the commercial
production of the African Giant Land Snail (Achatina achatina), a highly
nutritious and sought-after delicacy both locally and internationally.
The demand for snail meat in Nigeria has consistently exceeded local
production, leaving a significant gap in the market, especially during the dry
season when wild snails are scarce. Our business seeks to close this gap by
engaging in sustainable, year-round snail production using intensive
farming techniques under controlled environments.
We will also diversify into value-added products such as packaged
frozen snail meat, snail slime for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals,
and processed shells for ornamental and calcium-rich livestock feed products.
Our model emphasizes eco-friendliness, food security, and economic empowerment
for rural youth and women.
1.2 Business Objectives
- To
establish a modern snail farm with a production capacity of 50,000 mature
snails annually within the first year.
- To
become a major supplier of edible snails to major cities like Lagos,
Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.
- To
process and package at least 2 tons of frozen snail meat monthly by the
end of Year 2.
- To
generate a net profit margin of at least 30% annually.
- To
empower at least 100 women and youth through training and
cooperative-based contract farming models within 3 years.

Funding will be sourced from a combination of owner’s equity, soft
loans, and potential grants from agriculture development programs
(e.g., CBN’s Anchor Borrowers Program, BOA Loans, or NIRSAL Microfinance Bank).
1.4 Profitability and Return on
Investment (ROI)
With a modest starting population of 5,000 breeder snails and an annual
multiplication potential of 5 to 7 times per snail, Evergreen Snail Farms
projects a gross revenue of ₦12 million to ₦18 million by the end of
Year 1, with a profit margin of over 30% by Year 2.
2. Business Description
2.1 Industry Overview
Snail farming (heliciculture) is one of Nigeria’s most underexploited
agricultural sectors despite its huge economic potential. The Nigerian
Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) and the Institute of Agricultural
Research and Training (IAR&T) have emphasized the need for domestic snail
farming due to rising demand and declining wild populations.
The global edible snail market was valued at over $1.2 billion in
2022 and is growing due to increased demand for low-cholesterol protein and
snail slime for cosmetics. In Nigeria, snail meat is a delicacy enjoyed across
regions and religions, offering a huge consumer base.
Challenges such as seasonal supply, poor handling, lack
of standardized packaging, and low investment in breeding infrastructure
present major opportunities for well-structured farms like Evergreen to fill
the market gap.
