This
research assesses the impact of women entrepreneurship on the socio-economic
growth of rural dwellers in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area (LGA). The study
investigates how women entrepreneurs contribute to economic development and
identifies the challenges they face. Data was collected through structured
questionnaires distributed to 200 women entrepreneurs in Birnin Kudu, with a
focus on demographic characteristics, business contributions, challenges, and
support systems. Descriptive statistical methods were used to analyze the data.
The
findings reveal that women entrepreneurs in Birnin Kudu LGA significantly
contribute to socio-economic growth by creating jobs, providing essential goods
and services, and supporting local events. However, they face considerable
challenges, including limited access to capital, poor infrastructure, and
gender bias, which hinder their business growth. Despite these challenges, 55%
of respondents reported receiving some form of support, mainly in the form of
financial aid and training. The study concludes that empowering women
entrepreneurs is crucial for fostering sustainable socio-economic development
in rural areas. Recommendations include improving access to finance, providing
capacity-building programs, developing infrastructure, and creating policies
that address gender-related barriers. The study suggests further research to
explore the long-term effects of interventions on women entrepreneurship and
regional variations in rural areas. This research contributes to understanding
the vital role of women entrepreneurship in rural development and highlights
the need for targeted support to enhance their impact.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background to the Study
Women entrepreneurship has been recognized as a vital
component of economic growth, particularly in rural settings where traditional
employment opportunities are often scarce. In Nigeria, women's contributions to
economic activities have been notable, with many engaging in small-scale
businesses that serve local markets (Olufunke & Omoniyi, 2019). These
entrepreneurial efforts not only contribute to household income but also have
broader implications for community development and poverty alleviation. Birnin
Kudu LGA, situated in Jigawa State, is characterized by a largely agrarian
economy, with women playing a crucial role in both agricultural and
non-agricultural enterprises. In rural areas, where traditional gender roles
often restrict women's participation in the economy, entrepreneurship offers a
pathway for empowerment and independence. Many rural women have established
small businesses to supplement family incomes, provide for their children, and
gain financial autonomy. These businesses not only improve the economic status
of individual families but also contribute to local economic development by
stimulating demand for goods and services, thereby creating jobs and enhancing
community resources (UNDP, 2015).
Birnin Kudu LGA, located in Jigawa State, is
characterized by a predominantly agrarian economy, with agriculture serving as
the primary source of livelihood for most households. However, the region also
presents a fertile ground for the growth of women-led businesses, particularly
in non-farm sectors such as food processing, handicrafts, and retail. The
increasing involvement of women in entrepreneurship within this local context
reflects a shift towards recognizing women's potential as key economic actors.
Yet, despite these positive developments, women entrepreneurs in Birnin Kudu
face significant challenges that can hinder their success.
Access to financial resources remains a critical
barrier for women entrepreneurs in rural areas. Many women lack collateral and
financial literacy, which restricts their ability to secure loans from
traditional financial institutions. Furthermore, cultural norms often dictate
gender roles that limit women's freedom to engage in business activities or
expand existing enterprises (Fjeldstad et al., 2017). The lack of training
opportunities in business management and entrepreneurship further exacerbates
these challenges, leaving many women ill-equipped to navigate the complexities
of running a business.
Moreover, the socio-economic impact of women
entrepreneurship development is not only reflected in increased household
incomes but also in enhanced social capital within communities. Women
entrepreneurs often play vital roles in community leadership, advocacy, and the
provision of essential services, thereby fostering social cohesion and
collective progress. Their businesses can serve as hubs for social interaction
and community building, contributing to a more vibrant and interconnected local
economy.
Given this context, the proposed study aims to assess
the impacts of women entrepreneurship development on the socio-economic growth
of rural dwellers in Birnin Kudu LGA. By examining the contributions of
women-led businesses to household income, community development, and the
challenges faced by these entrepreneurs, this research seeks to provide
valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders aimed at fostering an
enabling environment for women entrepreneurship in rural Nigeria.
1.2
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of women
entrepreneurship in driving socio-economic growth, women in rural areas face
significant challenges. These include limited access to financial resources,
lack of education and training, cultural barriers, and insufficient support
from government and non-governmental organizations (Fjeldstad et al., 2017).
These challenges hinder their ability to fully contribute to their communities'
economic growth. Understanding the impact of women entrepreneurship on the
socio-economic development of rural dwellers in Birnin Kudu LGA is essential
for developing impactive policies and support mechanisms.
1.3

1.8
Historical Background of the study Area
Birnin Kudu Local Government Area (LGA) is located in
Jigawa State, Nigeria. Known for its rich history, Birnin Kudu has deep roots
in traditional Hausa culture and serves as a focal point of socio-economic
activities in the state. Historically, Birnin Kudu has been recognized for its
agricultural production, with residents primarily engaged in farming, livestock
rearing, and small-scale trading.
The area’s heritage is also significant due to the
famous rock paintings at Dutsen Mesa, which date back thousands of years and
represent one of Nigeria’s most important archaeological sites. These ancient
artworks highlight the region’s long-standing cultural importance and attract
researchers and tourists interested in early African art and history.
Birnin Kudu LGA is predominantly rural, with the
majority of its population living in small villages and dependent on
agriculture and local trade for sustenance. However, in recent years, there has
been a shift towards small-scale entrepreneurship among women, as they explore
diverse business opportunities to support their families and improve their
economic conditions. Despite these entrepreneurial efforts, Birnin Kudu faces
significant infrastructure challenges, including limited access to financial
services, education, healthcare, and market facilities.
