ABSTRACT

The accomplishment of goals and objectives of an institution or system is a barometer to measure the success of its programmes. In recent years, there has been public out-cry of the falling standard of education with no corresponding effort by the public or the government in improving the system.

The function of the mathematics teachers in the use of techniques for effective teaching of mathematics in primary school is of great importance in achieving/building a solid foundational knowledge of mathematics. This paper focuses on motivational strategies which could be used in reversing the techniques of effective teaching of mathematics with particular reference to the improvement of the lots of the mathematics teachers in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1   INTRODUCTION

Mathematics is part of human culture, this means it is man-made to respond to basic human needs. Mathematics is the pivot of our cultural development. It brings out the facts in life in a convincing manner. The progress of any nation depends on her scientific and technological advancement and these can be built on a sound mathematical education. This is so because mathematics is one of the essential aids by which other sciences, pure and applied are able to forge ahead.

Techniques are different ways of presenting a concept other than the regular one. These techniques aid recall and application of material knowledge acquired. As it is put by Bruner (1977) that unless detail is placed into a structured pattern, it is rapidly forgotten. In general techniques is of great importance in the learning/teaching of mathematics.

Effective teaching on the otherhand calls for basic knowledge, communication skills, technical skills and administrative skills on the part of the teacher to achieve he desired aims and objectives of education.

Primary schools are the bedrock-where mathematics takes it roots. Teaching mathematics in primary schools involves creating fun in trying to establish relationship between numbers, generic skills in counting, drawing, naming and communicating effectively. At this level techniques used should be accompanied with the use of relevant instructional materials, activity based and participatory methods, such that experiences acquired would be guaranteed.

This educational change and improvement can only be attained when the teachers are adequately motivated to enhance their performances. This research was conducted by the use of some selected primary schools in mainland Local Government Areas of Lagos State. In the process of carrying out this research, the researcher employed different types of research methods such as questionnaire design interviews and observation.

1.2   PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The rate at which pupils run away from mathematics and the poor performance of pupils give the researcher a great concern which has been attributed to the poor techniques the subject is handled by the teachers.

Therefore, this work will:

1.           Identify the factors responsible for the poor techniques of effective teaching.

2.           Suggest the ways of bringing about satisfaction and stability.

1.3   RESEARCH QUESTION

This study shall address the following research question:

1.           Does teachers’ qualification affects techniques

2.           Does teachers’ attitude to work affect techniques

1.4   STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS

1.      General working conditions of service have significant effects on techniques of teaching.

2.      Techniques for teaching mathematics has significance effect on learners/pupils.

1.5   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

There exist a non-challant attitudes from the teachers towards the techniques of effective teaching of mathematics.

The problem arose from the fact that the activities of the teachers does not give room for them to have basic knowledge of the subject matter. Study the individual differences of pupils, devise techniques and apply the appropriate one in the classroom while teaching.

1.6   DELIMITATION

This research was based on some selected schools in Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State.

1.7   LIMITATION

This research was limited by few factors there was no enough fund to carryout my investigation. Also, those interviewed were not co-operative as was expected.
