INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
TO THE
STUDY
At the outskirts of the Northern part
of Delta State in the Niger Delta area of the South-South region of Nigeria
lays the abode of the Ogwashi-Ukwu people. The people ·of 'Ogwash' as they are
popularly called are from the Anioma group of communities which is a blend of a
subdivision of the Ibo and Benin race, according to historian Chris Okafor,
The reason for the turning of the
spotlight on the people of Ogwashi-Ukwu is not far to seek. The people of this
region have been making headlines in recent times because of the contributions
of their sons and daughters to the growth of the political entity called
Nigeria with their numerous activities that are based on the spirit of loyalty
and nationhood.
Although this town might appear nondescript
on the Nigerian map, the contributions of these people as mentioned above have
put them on a pedestal as far as national recognition and deeds for the
fatherland is concerned. Some of the well-known names from this small town and
its surrounding, Anioma communities include the present of Finance. Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala, football midfield maestro and former Super Eagles captain,
Austin 'Jay Jay’.
Okocha, Co-founder of Zenith Bank Eddy
Egwuenu, Tony Elumelu, MD of United Bank for Attica, Jim Ovia, founder of
Zenith Bank and Professor Pat Utomi. Indeed, as at the time of this research,
Dr. Okonjo-lweala's father, a professor was the Obi of the town.
