Abstract
Personal hygiene is a fundamental component of health promotion and
disease prevention, particularly among students living in shared environments.
This study assessed the knowledge and practices of personal hygiene among
students of Jigawa State Polytechnic. The objectives were to evaluate students’
level of awareness regarding personal hygiene, examine their daily hygiene
practices, and identify factors influencing their behavior. A descriptive
cross-sectional research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected
using structured questionnaires administered to a representative sample of
students across different departments and levels. The data obtained were
analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, and
tables. The findings revealed that the majority of students possess a moderate
to high level of knowledge about personal hygiene, including handwashing, oral
care, bathing, and sanitation. However, despite this level of awareness, a gap
was observed between knowledge and actual practice. While many students
reported regular handwashing and bathing, inconsistent practices were noted in
areas such as proper handwashing techniques, use of clean sanitary facilities,
and regular changing of clothing. Factors such as inadequate water supply, poor
sanitation facilities, busy academic schedules, and personal attitudes were
identified as major constraints affecting good hygiene practices. The study
concluded that although students are generally knowledgeable about personal
hygiene, their practices are not consistently aligned with recommended
standards. It is therefore recommended that the institution should intensify
health education campaigns, improve water and sanitation infrastructure, and
promote behavioral change programs to enhance proper hygiene practices among
students.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Personal
hygiene refers to the set of practices performed by an individual to preserve
health and prevent the spread of diseases. These practices include regular
bathing, washing of hands with soap and clean water, oral hygiene, hair
grooming, nail trimming, wearing clean clothes, and proper disposal of waste.
Maintaining personal hygiene is one of the simplest yet most effective public
health interventions for preventing communicable diseases. According to the
World Health Organization (WHO, 2022), good hygiene habits reduce the burden of
infectious diseases such as diarrhea, respiratory infections, and skin
conditions by more than 40%.
Among students in higher
institutions, personal hygiene is particularly important because of the nature
of campus life. Students live in hostels, share lecture halls, libraries,
laboratories, and social spaces. The communal nature of these environments
increases the risk of spreading infections if personal hygiene is neglected.
Poor hygiene practices such as irregular bathing; improper hand washing after
using the toilet, sharing personal items like towels or razors, and wearing
unwashed clothes can lead to outbreaks of diseases like typhoid, cholera, skin
rashes, and respiratory infections.
Despite the apparent importance of
personal hygiene, research in Nigeria and other developing countries indicates
that many tertiary students do not consistently practice proper hygiene.
Factors contributing to this include limited access to clean water, poor
sanitation facilities, cultural beliefs, peer pressure, lack of time, and
inadequate health education. Even when students are aware of the principles of
good hygiene, translating that knowledge into daily habits remains a challenge.
Jigawa
State Polytechnic Dutse, is one of the major tertiary institutions in Northern
Nigeria, attracting students from different cultural, economic, and social
backgrounds. This diversity provides a unique environment for assessing hygiene
awareness and practices. Understanding how students perceive personal hygiene,
the extent of their knowledge, and their actual behaviors will provide evidence
for the school management and health authorities to design effective
interventions aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing hygiene-related
illnesses within the campus community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Personal
hygiene is a fundamental determinant of health and quality of life, yet it is
often neglected by young adults living in communal settings such as tertiary
institutions. In Nigeria, outbreaks of preventable diseases like cholera,
gastroenteritis, and respiratory infections have been linked to poor hygiene
and sanitation. Students in polytechnics and universities are particularly
vulnerable because they often share bathrooms, toilets, lecture halls, and
hostels.
Observation
within Jigawa State Polytechnic Dutse reveals
that some students fail to engage in basic hygiene practices such as regular
bathing, frequent hand washing, brushing of teeth, and proper disposal of
refuse. While some may have adequate knowledge of hygiene, practical adherence
remains questionable. There is currently no comprehensive data on the level of
hygiene awareness and the actual hygiene practices of students in this
institution. Without such information, it is difficult for management to design
effective health campaigns or provide the necessary facilities to improve
hygiene standards.
This study
is therefore designed to evaluate the awareness and practices of personal
hygiene among Jigawa State Polytechnic students. The findings will help to
determine whether a gap exists between what students know and what they
actually do, as well as identify factors that influence their hygiene behavior.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1 To evaluate the awareness and practices
of personal hygiene among students of Jigawa State Polytechnic.
2.
Specific Objectives
1. To assess the level of Knowledge of
personal hygiene among Jigawa State Polytechnic students.
2. To identify the common personal
hygiene practices of students across different departments and levels in jigawa
State Polytechnicm dutse
3. To examine the relationship between
knowledge and actual practice of personal hygiene among jigawa state
polytechnic dutse
4. To identify demographic and
environmental factors (such as gender, hostel residence, and availability of
facilities) that influence students’ hygiene practices.
1.4 Research Questions
The study has seeks to answer the
following questions:
1.
What
is the level of Knowledge of personal hygiene among Jigawa State Polytechnic
students?
2. What types of personal hygiene
practices are commonly observed among the students in jigawa state polytechnic
dutse
3. Is there a significant relationship
between students’ knowledge of personal hygiene and their actual practices?
4. What demographic and environmental
factors influence students’ personal hygiene practices among jigawa state
polytechnic dutse
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The
following hypotheses will guide the study:
- Null Hypothesis (H₀): There is no significant
relationship between awareness and practice of personal hygiene among
Jigawa State Polytechnic students.
- Alternative Hypothesis (H₁): There is a significant
relationship between awareness and practice of personal hygiene among
Jigawa State Polytechnic students.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The
results of this study will be significant in several ways:
1. Students: It will help students understand
the importance of personal hygiene and encourage behavioral changes that reduce
disease risks and enhance academic performance.
2. School Management: Data from the study will guide the
management in planning and implementing health education programs, improving
sanitary facilities, and designing campus-wide hygiene campaigns.
3. Public
Health Authorities:
Findings will provide useful information for government health agencies and
NGOs involved in health promotion among youths and tertiary institutions.
4. Researchers: The study will add to existing
literature and serve as a reference for future research on personal hygiene
practices in Nigerian polytechnics and universities.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This
research has focus exclusively on students of Jigawa State Polytechnic, Dutse.
It has cover various departments and levels of study but has exclude staff
members and non-student residents of the campus. The study has examine issues
such as hand washing, bathing, oral hygiene, grooming, laundry habits, and
environmental sanitation. It has also explore factors such as gender, access to
clean water, and living arrangements (hostel vs. off-campus) as they relate to
personal hygiene.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
- Personal Hygiene: Daily practices undertaken by an individual to
maintain cleanliness and promote health.
- Awareness: Knowledge and understanding of proper personal hygiene
practices.
- Practice: Actual behaviors and actions performed by individuals
in maintaining personal cleanliness.
- Students: Registered undergraduate or diploma students of Jigawa
State Polytechnic.
