1.0 INTRODUCTION
Leadership
is all about development of follower ship in a particular setting. It is the
act of influencing employees to work willingly and happily in order to put in
their best to achieve organization objectives.
Immediately
after the creation of human being into the world, the traits, duties or roles
of leadership has been transparent, even among the animals one does emerge to
identify itself as having certain qualities which other probably do not have
which make it to lend other either in autocratic or democratic manner.
In
achieving organizational objectives, the roles of leadership cannot be
over-emphasized. The management should be able to influence others within the
organization to work with willingness and enthusiason to enhance the speed of
the company’s run towards attaining organization objectives.
Therefore,
in the research work, attempts will be made to carryout in-depth study of
native and definition of leadership, types of leaders, determinant of a leader
as well as the major roles of leadership in achieving the organization
objectives.
Inductive
method of reasoning will also be used as certain number of sample say sixty
(60) populations shall be asked to answer the prepared question
(questionnaire). They will also be interviewed and their responds will be well
collated, analysis and interpreted.
Finding
in Afribank Nigeria Plc, while is the case study will also be included in this
research.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Leadership
has probably been written formally research and information discussed more than
any other single topic through history, it has been recognized that the
difference between success and failure, whether in a business or a basket ball
game can largely be attributed to leadership. It is known to exist and to have
a tremendous influence on human performance but its inner working and specific
dimension cannot be precisely spelt out. Despite these inherent difficulties, a
view of some widely known classic studies on leadership can help set stage for
the analysis of modern theories and styles of leadership.
Leadership
is a key process in an organization that drives an organization to beautiful
land of fulfillment. When a basic credit when failure also occurs, it is
usually the same individual at the top that is reprimanded.
Leadership
serves as the art of getting things done through other people instruct of doing
it oneself The essence of leadership is to influence other people to work
willingly and enthusiastically to achieve organization objectives. It the right

are the way to preserve organization existence, if it is true as it is often
said that morale is three quarters of victory. The function of leaderships

followers to contribute willingly to organizational goals in accordance with
their maximum capacity.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Lack
of effective and efficient leaders and leadership style in an organization will
in no small measure make an organization in capable of achieving its
objectives. Adequate attention is not being given to the role of leadership in
achieving organization objectives.
The
question of which leadership style can best help in achieving organization
objectives has not be paramount importance to channel appropriate effort in
view of the significant portion roles of leadership constitute in achieving
organization objectives this is the issue understand this study.
1.3 JUSTIFICATION FOR THE STUDY
The
roles of leadership is one of the live wires in an organization attempts to
achieve its objective. Therefore, this research work will be very useful to
both the private and public sectors in their day-to-day operation and also in
their choice of leaders to various position.
In
the past, various research worked have been carried out in the area of
leadership impacts in organization. Notwithstanding, some important areas have
not been really evaluated or studies.
The
role of leadership will help to enhance the achievement of organization
objectives and the research work will also help the research the digest with
great knowledge of what leadership is end one need to appoint the right leader
to lead an organization.
1.4 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Every
organization at its inception has a set of objectives and strive willingly and
enthusiastically to achieve the set objectives.
However,
before these objectives can be achieved organizations engage the services of a
good and competent leader.
The success
of the organization depends on the ability of the leaders in company to perform
efficiently and effectively.
Therefore,
the objectives of this study are listed below:

To
influence, motivate or include subordinates to work willingly and
enthusiastically towards the achievement of organization goals in Afribank plc.
2.
to carry
along and encourage in participating of employee in the decision making

To improve
workers morale through motivating then to work with happiness towards the
attainment of the objective of the organization (Afribank Plc).
4.
To carryout
sample survey to sixty (60) populations interview them and make attempt to
interpret the results.
1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE
STUDY
In every
research work, there are bound to the limitations and constraints. The limitation
in terms of obstacles encountered in the cause of preferring this project is:

High cost of
carryout the research
2.
Short time
limit imposed on the project work. However, necessary data were obtained within
the short time.
3.
Likely
errors in questionnaires which may arise as a result of non responsible
incorrect response or bias. Also, some reliable information may try
confidential and such may not divulged.
1.6 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF AFRIBANK NIGERIA PLC
Afribank
Nigeria Plc happened to be one of the four (4) leading bank in Nigeria. It was
initially known as “International Bank of West Africa limited (IBWA). Afribank
Nigerian plc received a banking license in 1959 and the subsequent opening of
the first bank of IBWA in Kano state on 18th January, 1960.
Over
the years, Afribank has been consistently and vigorously pursuing its aspiration
of being the “supermarket” of the financial world. This had be shown through it
effort by establishing various subsidiaries that deal in merchant insurance
brokerage, estate trustees and securities and offshare banking in Dublin,
Republic of Ireland.
On 15th
of April 1986, a new portfolio was added to the finance department of Afribank the
insurance department. A full fledged insurance brokerage that led to the
opening of insurance broker on 1st May 1988 was taken after much
definition by the movement of Afribank Nigeria Plc.
The
board of Afribank plc is very conscious of its duties to the banks shareholders
deposits and it future growth. These duties include the following:

Enhancing

payment and transfer scheme (ADEPTS) to mention just a few.

decision making which is the process by which a course of actions for the
purpose of effective leadership in an organization.
ORGANIZATION: This is the act of
guiding and supervision the subordinate in relation to the use to resource and
the achievement of organizational objectives. It is also referred to as leading
or motivating.
LEADERSHIP: This is the
art of influencing and motivating subordinate to work willingly and enthusiastically
to achieve organization objectives.
A LEADER: this is someone that is
capable of influencing inspiring, including motivating employees to work harder
with happiness in order to attain organization objectives.
CO-ORDINATION:- this is the process of
combining activities in a consistent and harmonious way in order to ensure
efficiency and effectiveness in an organization.
CONTROLLING: This can be referred to as
activities involved in evaluating the organization’s objectives by comparing
the planed performance with a view to discover and correct deviation that might
occur.
TRAITS: these are certain qualities,
while are deemed to be possessed by an effective leaders.
STYLE: this is used to describe the
manner in which a leader behaves which can autocratic democratic or lassies
