ABSTRACT
This study examines the role of women in socio-economic development in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Dutse Local Government Area (LGA). Women constitute a significant proportion of Nigeria’s population and contribute substantially to household welfare, community development, and national growth. Despite these contributions, their efforts are often underrecognized and constrained by socio-cultural, economic, and institutional barriers. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, using a structured questionnaire administered to 50 respondents drawn from diverse occupational and age groups within Dutse LGA. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency tables and percentages, while findings were interpreted in relation to existing literature. Results indicate that women in Dutse LGA play vital roles in trading, farming, artisan work, civil service, and small-scale enterprises, contributing significantly to household income and community development. However, their potential is hindered by challenges such as limited access to credit facilities, low educational attainment, cultural and religious restrictions, and inadequate representation in decision-making processes. The study concludes that enhancing women’s participation in socio-economic activities requires a multi-dimensional approach, including improved access to education and vocational training, financial empowerment programs, policy reforms promoting gender equality, and awareness campaigns to challenge socio-cultural barriers. Recommendations include the establishment of gender-sensitive development programs, increased representation of women in governance, and the provision of accessible credit facilities to support women’s economic ventures. The study further suggests that future research explore comparative studies across multiple LGAs to understand regional variations in women’s socio-economic contributions.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0
Introduction
Socio-economic development encompasses the
process of improving the well-being of people through sustained economic
growth, improved living standards, and the equitable distribution of resources.
In developing countries like Nigeria, the role of women has increasingly become
recognized as pivotal to achieving these goals. Women are essential
contributors to economic productivity, social welfare, and political stability.
They engage in diverse activities ranging from agriculture, commerce,
education, health care, and entrepreneurship to public service, thereby
influencing national development (Okafor & Akokuwebe, 2015).
Despite historical gender discrimination, women
have proven to be agents of change and transformation within society. In Dutse
Local Government Area of Jigawa State, women play significant roles in trade,
small-scale industries, education, and household sustenance. However, their
full potential remains underutilized due to cultural, social, and economic
barriers (Awe, 2018).
This study focuses on understanding the extent
of women’s contribution to socio-economic development in Nigeria with Dutse
Local Government Area as a case study. It also highlights the challenges women
face and proposes ways to enhance their participation in the development
process.
1.1 Background
to the Study
Women have long been recognized as integral
contributors to the socio-economic development of nations. Globally, their
involvement spans diverse sectors, including agriculture, commerce, health,
education, governance, and entrepreneurship (World Bank, 2020). In developing
countries like Nigeria, where economic diversification and sustainable growth
are critical, women’s roles are particularly significant. They are often
responsible for household sustenance, food production, and participation in
both formal and informal economic activities, yet their contributions are
frequently undervalued due to historical gender inequality (Awe, 2018).
Socio-economic development refers to the
improvement in the economic well-being and quality of life of a population,
often measured by factors such as income levels, education, healthcare access,
and infrastructure (Todaro & Smith, 2020). Women play a vital role in
driving these improvements, particularly in rural areas where they engage in
farming, small-scale trading, handicrafts, and other entrepreneurial activities
that support household income and local economies. Despite this, women in
Nigeria still face barriers to full participation, including limited access to
education, financial services, land ownership, and political representation
(Ejumudo, 2013).
Historically, Nigerian society has been
characterized by patriarchal structures where women were relegated to domestic
roles while men dominated political, economic, and decision-making spheres
(Okafor & Akokuwebe, 2015). However, in recent decades, there has been a
shift towards recognizing women as active participants in national development.
Policies such as the National Gender Policy (2006), the African Union Agenda
2063, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have
emphasized gender equality as a prerequisite for sustainable development (UNDP,
2021). These frameworks encourage governments to create inclusive economic
environments where women can contribute effectively to national growth.
In Nigeria, women account for nearly half of
the population and provide substantial labor input in agriculture and the
informal economy. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2022), women
contribute approximately 43% of the agricultural labor force, producing food
for household consumption and local markets. They also dominate the informal
trade sector, where they engage in small businesses that sustain family income
and support community livelihoods. However, gender disparities in education,
credit facilities, and access to productive resources continue to undermine
their potential (World Economic Forum, 2021).
In Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State,
women are actively involved in farming, petty trading, food processing, tailoring,
and other small-scale enterprises that directly support local economic
activities. Many of them also play important roles in community health
initiatives, educational services, and cooperative societies. Despite their
involvement, socio-cultural constraints, poor access to microcredit schemes,
and limited entrepreneurial training hinder their economic progress. Moreover,
traditional beliefs often prevent women from owning land or inheriting
property, restricting their ability to expand agricultural and business
ventures (Awe, 2018).
Understanding the roles women play in
socio-economic development within Dutse Local Government Area is therefore
essential. It not only highlights their contributions but also identifies the
challenges they face and provides insights into strategies for empowering them
further. The study is significant in the context of Nigeria’s broader
development agenda, as enhancing women’s participation in economic activities
has been linked to poverty reduction, improved family welfare, and inclusive
national growth (World Bank, 2020).
1.2 Statement
of the Problem
Despite women’s undeniable contributions to
socio-economic development, their efforts are often undervalued and
underreported. Gender inequality, limited access to education, financial
exclusion, and cultural barriers hinder their full participation in national
development.
In Dutse Local Government Area, many women face
challenges such as inadequate access to credit facilities, lack of vocational
training, and low political representation. These limitations affect their
economic productivity and restrict their potential to contribute meaningfully
to socio-economic growth. This study seeks to address the following concerns: What
is the extent of women’s contribution to socio-economic development in Dutse
Local Government Area? What challenges do they face in maximizing their roles? What
strategies can be adopted to improve women’s participation in development
initiatives?
1.3 Objectives
of the Study
- To identify the various socio-economic activities undertaken
by women in Dutse Local Government Area.
- To assess the contributions of these activities to the
development of the area.
- To examine the challenges faced by women in participating in
socio-economic development.
- To propose strategies for enhancing women’s involvement in
socio-economic development.
1.4 Research
Questions
- What are the major socio-economic activities of women in Dutse
Local Government Area?
- How do these activities contribute to the development of the
area?
- What challenges hinder women’s full participation in
socio-economic development?
- What strategies can be adopted to enhance women’s role in
development?
1.5
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights
the crucial roles women play in economic growth and social transformation,
particularly in Dutse Local Government Area. Findings from the study will
provide insights for policymakers, non-governmental organizations, and
community leaders to design policies and programs that encourage gender
equality and empower women. Additionally, it will serve as a reference for
researchers and students interested in gender studies and development.
1.6 Scope and
Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Dutse Local Government
Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria. It covers women’s participation in key sectors
such as agriculture, trade, education, and entrepreneurship. The study also
examines the challenges women face and proposes strategies for improvement.
Limitations of the study include restricted access
to some respondents due to cultural factors, time constraints, and limited
financial resources for extensive data collection. Despite these challenges,
efforts will be made to ensure that the study’s findings are accurate and
reliable.
