ABSTRACT
This study examined the garment drawing skills possessed by students. The problems hindering students’ skill acquisition. Also the strategies for enhancing acquisition of skill in garment drawing in Michael Okpara University Umudike Abia State and Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe Anambra State. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 191 students from Michael Okpara University Umudike and Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe. The sample size was 146. Questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analysed using mean. Results revealed, among others, that the tools and equipment are inadequate in the garment drawing laboratories in the schools. It is therefore recommended, among others, that students’ practical classes should be conducted regularly. The practical classes should be funded by the school. Exhibition, fashion shows should be organized by the lecturers to motivate the students.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND
OF THE STUDY
Home
Economics is the profession and field of study that deals with the economics
and management of home and society. It is a field of formal study including
such topics as consumer education institutional management. Interior design,
home furnishing, hand craft, sewing, clothing and textiles, cooking, nutrition,
food preservation, hygiene, child
development and family relationship.
Clothing and textiles is one of the major area of Home Economics taught in
tertiary institutions in Abia and Anambra states. Uko-Aviomah (2005) described
clothing and textiles program as an entrepreneurial skill oriented field of
study that is expected to equip learners with saleable skill that make for self
–reliance and paid employment. It equips students with skill and helps in
development of creativity and artistic abilities. Osifeso (2004) opined that the aim of clothing and textile
circular at the tertiary level is to teach the learners how to strategically
plan and use available resource on their environment to improve their homes, society and family and
societal clothing needs.
The
“word” Drawing is a form of visual art in which a person uses various drawing
instrument to mark paper or another two-dimensional medium. Drawing is one of
the major forms of expression within the visual arts. It is generally concerned
with the making of lines and areas of tone onto paper/ other material, where
the accurate representation of the visual world is expressed upon a plane
surface.
Garment drawing is a form of using drawing
instruments to sketch on paper the ideas of garment styles and shape. Garment
drawing is aimed at teaching the students the basics of drawing by focusing on
form, shape, light, shadow, perspective and the human form. It is vital for a
student to translate their designs onto paper, in order for the designer and
client to visually agree on the same design goal. Students learn various
drawing techniques such as pattern making. The instruments for garment drawing
are graphite pencil, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons,
chalks, eraser, markers, paper, cardboard, board(white or black), ruler, brown
paper, French curve, set-square, tape.
Arubayi
(2010) asserted that garment drawing is a characteristically skill and activity
oriented which when properly taught with relevant tools and equipment will
equip the leaner with saleable skills needed for self reliance.
Sarpong,
Howard and Amankwah (2012) observed lecturers of garment drawing are expected
to equip the students with the skills and knowledge that will make their
graduation employ able and self reliance, thus reduce employment and poverty.
One of the eight Nigerian millennium development goals is to eradicate extreme
poverty. Nwazor (2012) stated that for Nigeria to achieve the millennium
development goals, capacity building of states is through adequate skill
acquisition in various fields of study especially in vocational technical
education is mandatory because it is an essential tool to any national growth
and development. Azikiwe (2012) defined capacity building as the process by
which individuals irrespective of sex are equipped with skills and knowledge
they need to perform efficiently in their different callings. Nwazor
(2012) also noted that
capacity building would also be
seen as the ability that enable
people to make use of their
creative potentials, intellectual capacities and leadership abilities for
personal as well as national growth and development.
Quigley,
marshal, Deaton, cook, and Padilla (2011) assented that
teachers have great challenge and
responsibility of helping students learn so that they develop the skills and
knowledge needed more beyond being
passive recipients of knowledge to become knowledge builder, capable of
generating creative innovation creative
innovation solutions to problems,
Arubayi
and Obunadike (2011) stated that the teacher has enormous role to play in
motivating and imparting knowledge in clothing and textiles to students. The
effectiveness of the teacher depends on the application and transfer of
technical and professional skill, knowledge and competence to the learners and
management of the learning environment. Sarpong, Howard and Amankwah (2012)
contend that the demand for teaching in higher education involves learning
processes which require lecturers to set clear and precise aims and objectives
with proper understanding of the knowledge and skills they transfer.
Intuitional strategies and materials that lecturers use influence their
success. Lecturers who use greater variety of instructional techniques and
support their teaching with instructional materials are more likely to promote
greater learning among students.
World
Bank Report (2012) noted that unless government and the ministers of education
state the problem create by inadequate supplies of books and equipment, the
returns in education and student capacity building, no matter how far reaching,
are unlikely to be effective. Mberengua (2004) had earlier on pointed out the
need for upgrading of laboratories as priority especially with technology
equipment.
Arubayi
(2014) mentioned that funding is life wire of any educational program and the
bed rock for any effective acquisition of practical skills. No practical skill
can be acquired without the promotion of funds for procurement of consumables
and non-consumables resource materials. If garment drawing is to meet natural
goals, the program should be properly funded- funds are required for the
provision facilities such as laboratories, classrooms, libraries, laboratories,
workshops, furniture and the maintenance of these facilities the government
laboratories need to be equipment. This study empirically examined the
strategies for enhancing acquisition of garment drawing skills among Home
Economics undergraduate in Abia and Anambra States.
1.2 STATEMENT
OF THE PROBLEM
The researcher has observed that students and
graduates of Home Economics are inefficient in applying the elements and
principles of design to garment drawing. Also, inadequate skills in garment
drawing affect pattern drafting and construction. This study therefore was
designed to investigate strategies for enhancing acquisition of garment drawing
skills among home economics undergraduate in selected institutions in Abia and
Anambra state.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE
STUDY
The
main objective of the study is to identify the strategies for enhancing
acquisition of garment drawing skills among Home Economics undergraduate.
Specifically the study
will:
·
Identify the garment drawing skills possessed
by Home Economics students.
·
Examine the problems hindering students’ skill
acquisition in garment drawing
·
Determine the strategies for motivating
students in garment drawing skill acquisition.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
·
What are the garment
drawing skills required by Home Economics students?
·
What are the problems
hindering students’ skill acquisition in garment drawing?
·
What are the strategies
for enhancing students’ skill acquisition in garment drawing?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE
STUDY
This
research work will be of benefit to students, government, graduates of Home Economics
and academic institutions.
This
research work will be of benefit to students on the need to acquire garment
drawing skills as life skill and competences to maximize their potentials for
successful employment and self reliance. It will benefit the government by
reducing the rate of unemployment among graduates. Also, graduates of Home
Economics who acquire garment drawing skills can produce well fitted clothing
thereby reducing the rate of importation of clothing and garment accessories.
It will form as a research material for further investigation into this field
of study in the academic institution.
1.6 SCOPE OF STUDY
The
study covered the strategies for enhancing acquisition of garment drawing skills
among Home Economics undergraduates in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture
Umudike Abia State and Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe Anambra State.
