ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to investigate the influence of student enrolment on academic performance. The design of the study is descriptive while the population comprised students of Government science senior secondary school Dutse. The objective of the study is to identify whether the student academic performance depend on enrolment using fisher's exact test, and to determine whether if there is significant difference on student's performance in WAEC and NECO using Paired sample t-test, and also to determine whether if there is relationship on student's performance in WAEC and NECO using Pearson's product moment correlation. Using fisher's exact test in both NECO and WAEC, the p-value >0.05 indicates that the student academic performance does not depend on enrolment at 5% significant level, using Paired sample t-test indicate that p-value <0.05, this show that there is significance difference on student's performance in WAEC and NECO at 5% significant level, and Pearson's product moment correlation show that there is strong positive relationship between WAEC and NECO. Based on the findings of this study useful suggestion and recommendation where offered as strategies encouraging the government to reverse the system of automatic promotion in all schools in Jigawa state with the view to maintaining quality and also government should as well make effort to provide enough funds for schools, so that principals can improve the academic standards and programmes.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Student’s enrolment and academic performance refers to how student deals with their studies and how they cope with or accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers. Enrolment is the process of militating attendance to a school. The total number of students’ properly registered and/or attending classes at a school. In the other hand, enrolment is the act of putting student onto the official list as the member registered in the school, while academic performance is the ability to study and remember fact and been able to communicate your knowledge verbally or down on paper. The academic performance or academic achievement is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has attained their short or long term educational goals. In this research before conclusion can be drawn one may need to consider some certain things and noted them. Firstly one may need to draw conclusion that yet the number of enrolment and academic performance is increasing or not. And one need scientific approach but certain processes have to be adopted so that conclusion could be drawn. Furthermore, in this research attempt is made to investigate the relationship between enrolment and academic performance in senior school certificate examination (S.S.C.E) at Government Science Secondary Schools Dutse, Jigawa State.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) is an examination board established by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in the English - speaking West African Countries, to conduct the examinations and to award certificates. Compared to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally. Established in (1952), the council has contributed to education Anglophonic countries of West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra leone, Liberia, and the Gambia), with the number of examinations they have coordinated and certificates they have issued. They also formed an endowment fund, to contribute to the education in West Africa through lectures and aid to those who cannot afford education.

National Examination Council (NECO) was founded by the former head of state Abdulsalamu Abubakar in April 1999. It was the first federal organization of offer subsidized registration to academic candidates in Nigeria. The National Examination Council (also known as NECO) is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the senior secondary certificate examination and the general certificate in education in June/July and November/December respectively. NECO was mandate to take over the responsibilities of the National Board of Education measurement (NBEM). Its maiden examination took place in mid-2000.

1.2 Historical background of the study area

The idea of government day senior secondary school gadadin Dutse in Jigawa state, also known as day science, was established in the year 1991 under Brigadier General Olayinka Sule rtd. during the military regime of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

The government day science senior secondary school was located at Gadadin along the old Kano-Dutse road, Jigawa state. However, this thirty year (30) abandoned project has since been rehabilitated and equipped with modern equipments by the administration of the past government of His Excellency Gov. Muhammad Badaru Abubakar. Teachers were recruited in different subject areas, computer- and science laboratories were provided, new class rooms were constructed, and working materials were provided for the students. This is laudable  for the entire community, and entire State at large. The Scool has 59 staffs which include 15 permanent teachers, 18 coppers, 5 bodyguard and 18 sweepers the school has 28 classes 2 Admin block, 2 Library Guidance and council office, computer lab, chemistry lab, Biology lab, Physics lab, including agricultural lab. And also the school is from junior to senior (JSS to SSS classes) and the SSS class is offering 9 to 11 subjects namely, English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Agricultural Science, Civic Education, Islamic Studies, Hausa Language and English Literature.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

There are various problem that were associated with the education system in Jigawa state especially the enrolment and academic performance of students in Jigawa state. The problems are many but to mention a few of them: Lack of qualified teachers, shortage of laboratory equipment, and lack of discipline and morality among the students. The purpose of this research is to identify the significant difference between WAEC and NECO result for the student on science schools and highlight the Jigawa state government to know the significant difference base on result performance among the WAEC and NECO examination.

1.4 Aim and Objectives

The aim of this research is to analyse students' performance in relation to their enrolment through the following objectives.

1.      To identify whether the student academic  performance depend on enrolment.

2.      To determine whether if there is significant difference on student's performance in WAEC and NECO.

3.      To determine whether if there is significant  relationship on student's  performance in WAEC and NECO.

1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study

Scope

This research work is based on educational sector in Jigawa state with special emphasis on the enrolment and academic performance of student in Government day science secondary schools Dutse, Jigawa State for the period of thirteen years (from 2010 to 2023). It should be noted that the performance is limited to students having entry requirement into Higher Institutions, that is, Five credits and above, including mathematics and English language. The data for this project is obtained from Jigawa state educational research development (J.S.E.R.D).

1.5.2 Limitation

This research is limited to Government Day Science Senior Secondary Schools, Dutse. But we lead the research to Government Day Science Senior Secondary School, Gadadin, Dutse of the fact that times and money will not permit to extend my finding to many places. Therefore, we hope that the outcome of this research will be beneficial to these who need to know the performance of the Government Day Science Senior Secondary Schools Dutse, and to Jigawa state educational research development (J.S.E.R.D). This research is only limited on male student for Government Day Science Senior Secondary Schools Dutse. The future work can be done for Government Day Science Senior Secondary School, Dutse (Female).
