ABSTRACT
This project work dealt primarily on the production and acceptability of craft among undergraduate students in Home Economics. A sample size of twenty students from the department of Home Economics who have gone through craft course were selected for the study. From the study, it was found that majority (35%) of the students preferred producing beads, while 20% produced basket. 20% of the students produced handbags, while 25% of the students produced hats. Majority (45%) of the students produced craftwork because they want to sell it to make money. 40% of the students produced craftwork for personal use. 40% of the students were of the opinion that adding design to a craftwork makes it more acceptable, while 25% of the students argued that maintaining the size of the craftwork makes it more acceptable.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
to the Study
Craft
production is the process of manufacturing by hand with or without the aid of
tools. Geek (2000) states that craft production is a method of creating goods
by hand, often with simple tools. This type of one off production was widely
used prior to the industrial revelation, and is still practiced around the
world. Unlike mass production, craft production results in items that are each
unique in small ways, since they are made by hand one at a time.
Crafts
produced goods can vary in quality, though they are often thought to have higher production values than mass production
versions. It is often possible for a craftsman to achieve certain effects or
levels of details using techniques that are not viable in mass production.
Womack,
Jones and Roos (2004) recorded that machine that changed the world detailed
that early automobiles were craft produced.
In
addition, Olanaton and Ola (2001) observed that mass production has many
drawbacks to craft production including the production quality can be lower
than a craft produced item. In some mass production automobile manufacturing
facilities, craftmen rework flawed, mass produced vehicle to give the
appearance of a quality product.
Lean
manufacturing aims to bring back or exceed the quality of craft production and
remedy the inefficiency of mass production through the elimination of waste
(Onuka and Olanaton, 2007). A business might be run from house, an office or
store (Adisa and Sodiq, 2008, Osuala, 2000). It may also focus the individual
works of land which is normally done with the use of materials.
Abia
state has a very rich cultural heritage which is reflected in the people’s way
of life (Dafton, 2008). It is visually expressed in the colourful dances, artifacts
and crafts of the people. Ezeonu and Ozuba (2001) stated that crafts of various
forms and dimensions are also produced in Ikwuano and Ngwa areas of the state.
Monuments which are erected in cement are prominent features in some villages
of the southern part of the state.
In
fact, the introduction of the teaching of craft in school and colleges came
about largely as a result of the vision, initiative and untiring effort of
Chief Aina Enabolu who had studied drawing, painting and design in England and
France from 1920 to 1922. He was known to be the first African craft student in
England and it appears that his main concern from the outset was to prove that
given the opportunity, an African was capable of matching the European in the
realm of craft.
Ozu
(2000) stated that craft of various dimensions are produced in large and
commercial quantity. Some are for utility purposes and some for decorations and
ornamental. The major ones are: i. Sleeping mats and hand fans which are
produced at Uturu ii. Pot making is prominent in Ubakala, Umuahia and Lopanta
in Umunneochi local government areas.
Travelers
along Enugu/Port Harcourt expressway are often attracted by a beautiful display
of these pots on both sides of the road. These wares find markets throughout
Nigeria and beyond. According to Izu and Eze (2007) stated that another craft
production in Abia State is traditional cloth weaving and the most popular one
is Akwete cloth.
1.2 Statement
of the Problem
People
do not accept or buy handcrafts as it should be because many of the crafts made
nowadays lack proper finishing. Investigation has revealed that the major
problem is poor method of prepare these crafts. Crafts should be a cherished
ornament in houses but today many feel disappointed the way crafts are being
produced without proper attention.
1.3 Objective
of the Study
The
main objective of the study is to examine the production and acceptability of
crafts among undergraduate students in Home Economics.
The
specific objectives are to:
1) examine
the productions of craft among Home Economics undergraduate in Abia State;
2) determine
the acceptability of craft among Home Economics undergraduates in Abia State;
3) examine
the problems encountered by undergraduates in craft production; and
4) highlight
strategies for improving craft production among Home Economics undergraduate in
Abia State.
1.4 Research
Questions
1.
What
are the crafts produced by one hundred and two Home Economics undergraduate in Universities
in Abia State
2.
How
are the crafts produced by Home Economics undergraduates acceptable?
3.
What
are the problems associated with the production of crafts among Home Economics
undergraduates in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike?
4.
What
are the strategies for improving the production of crafts among Home Economics undergraduate
in Abia State?
1.5
Significance of the Study
Crafts
offer the satisfaction of working on the whole production of an article.
Persons who work on an assembly line usually work with only one or several
parts. They miss the pleasure of planning and making an object from the
beginning to the end. Handicrafts also offer relief from monotony and
uniformity of mass production. People
often turn to Handicrafts for enjoyment and recreation. Handicrafts also serve
as occupational therapy. This study will benefit the following:
1. Undergraduate:
this will help the undergraduates to be self-employed and be creative in their
works which will help them to be
dependent and useful citizens.
2. Craftemen:
They are the ones that produce the goods that have to sold to customers. If the
products are of good quality, they will earn more money and their product will
be easily distributed and accepted by the people.
3. Unemployed:
The unemployed should attend workshops and seminars which will help them to
know how to produce different types of crafts and in so doing they will create
their own business.
4. Destitute:
The government should provide an avenue for the poor, which will help them to have
where they will earn money and be employed which makes them to have sense of security.
The
study will help Many Hospitals because patients as well as the blind and
permanently bedridden, take part in handicraft programmes. A patient who does
leather or weaves belt, rugs or Handbags, often is too busy to think about his
illness. Also, Special organizations train these people on various crafts and
help them to sell the articles they make. In this way, patients and handicapped
people can earn income. Craftworks give scope for the development of manual
dexterity. The training of the human eye to see correctly and to appreciate
things according to their values goes together with the development of skills
in craftsmanship.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The
study is limited to Home Economics undergraduate’s students in Michael Okpara
University of Agriculture, Umudike.
