CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

The term heavy metal refers to any metallic chemical element that has a low relative high density and is toxic or poisonous at low concentration. Examples of heavy metal include mercury (Hg), cadmium (cd) arsenic (As), cromium (CR), Thallium (Ti), and lead (Pb).

Judas priest 1970s.

Heavy metal can also be referred to as natural component of the earth’s crust. They can not be degraded or destroyed. To a small extent, they enter our bodies through food, drinking water and air. As trace elements, some heavy metal example copper, selenium, zinc are essential to maintain the metabolism of the human baby.

However, at higher concentration, they can lead to poisoning.

Heavy metal are dangerous because they tend to biaccumulate. Bioaccumulation means an increase in concentration of a chemical in a biological organism over time, compared to the chemical concentration in the environment.

Compound accumulate in living things any time they are taken up and stored faster than they are broken down (metabolized) or excreted.

Characteristics of Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic hyth rhythms, dense base and – drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these tropes. The typical band line up include a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, a singer, who may or may not be an instrument. A coustic key boards were popular with early metal band or may not be an organ and occasionally the methotron – but are now uncommon. Electronic keyboard are often featured today by bands in a variety of styles including progressive metal, power metal and symphonic metal. (Burraigh’s 1964).

The electric guitar and Sonic power that it projects through amplication is historically the key element in heavy metal. Guitars are often played with distortion pedals through heavily over driven tube amplifiers to create a thick, powerful, ‘heavy’ sound. In the early writer William S. Burroughs. His 1962 novel the soft machine includes a character known as Urbanian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid.”

Burrough’s nest novel, Nova express (1964, developed the theme, using heavy metal as a metaphor for addictive drugs, “with” their disease and orgasm drugs and their sexless parasite life form – Heavy metal people of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes – And the insect people of minraud with metal music. (William S. Burroughs 1962). Metal historian lan Christe describes what the component of the term mean in “hippies peak” “heavy” is roughly synonyms with potent or profound” and “metal” designates a certain type of mood, grinding and weighted as with meta. The word “heavy” in this sense was a basic element of beatnik and later countercultural slang, and references to heavy music – typically slower, more amplified variation of standard pop fare – were already common by the mid-1960s. Iron Butterfly’s debut album, released in early 1968, was titled heavy. The first recorded use of heavy metal in a song lyric is in Steppenwolf’s Born to Be Wild”, also release that year(26). “I like smoke and lightning/heavy metal thunder/Racin with the wind/And the feeling that I’m under”. A late and disputed, claim about the source of the term was made by “chas” Chandler, former manger of the of the Jimi Hendrix Experie, ence. In a 1995 interview on the PCS program Rock and Roll the he asserted that heavy metal was a term originated in a new York Times article reviewing a Jimi Hendrix performance”. In which the author likened the event to listening to heavy metal falling from the sky”. The specific source for chandlers claim has never be found. (Lan Christe 1960) – The first documented usage of the term to describe a musical usage of the term to describe a musical style is in a May  1971 Creem review by Mike Saunders of Sir Lord Baltimore’s Kindome comer.” Sir Lord Battimore seems to have down fast most all the best heavy metal tricks in the book.” Creem critic lester Bangs is credited with popularizing the term via his early 1970s essays on band such as led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. “Heavy metal” may have initially been used as a jibe by number of music critics, but “it was quickly adopted by fans of the style. (Sir Lord Baltimore 1971).

The term “heavy metal” and “hard rock” have often used interchanging, particularly in discussing band of the 1970s, a period when the term were largely synonymous. For example according to an entry in the 1983 Rolling stone encyclopedia, known for it’s aggressive blue-based hard-rock style, Aerosmith stone top American heavy-metal band of the mid-seven ties.” Few would now characterized Aerosmith classic sound, with the emergence of the genre, such as led Zeppelin and Deep purple, are not considered heavy metal bands by some present by community. (Iron Butterfly 1983).

In 1970s, some popular metal began cofeaturing two guitarist leading band such as judas poist and Iron madden followed thus pattern of having two or three guitarist. Share the role of both lead and rhythm gultar. A central element of much heavy metal is the gultar solo, a form of cadenza. As the genre developed, more intricate sols and riffs became an integral part of the style. Guitarist use sweep-picking, tapping, and other advanced techniques for rapid playing, and many subgenres emphasize vituosic displays. The lead role of guitar is heavy often collides with the traditional “frontman” or bandleader role of the vacalist, creating a musical tension. Metal vocal vary widely in style, from the multioctave, theatrical manner of Judas Perist Rob Halford and Iron Maidens Bryce Dickinson, to the straight-out screaming of lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and at the Gate Tomas lindberg, to the phlegm – clogged, possessed style of black metal singers such as Mayhem’s Dead. The bass guitar plays an important role in most metal bands, providing the low-end sound crucial to making the music “heavy. In (Bruce Dickinson 1970).

In addition, the bass is often disbbred and modified by a variety of effect pedals.

Metal bassist frequently use picks instead of their fingers to get a strong articulation.

Metal songs are more likely than those of other rock genres to employ bass solos, particularly in the first few bars. The drum setup is generally much larger than with other forms of rock music. Aside from the standard toms, bass drum, snare and hi-hat, ride, and crash, cymbals, there is often a double bass drum, addition toms and cymbals (e.g “splash” cymbals), and other instruments such as a cowbell Br. (Dick Peter Son 1996).

In conclusion, this seminar is concerned with study of effect of heavy metal on plants and it’s environments.
