ABSTRACT

This project work titled “communication and workers’ performance in an organization” using Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi as case study aims to ascertain how the problem of bureaucracy in the organization affect the assistance to students, managers and businesses and to examine whether communication channel pose a barrier to effective communication in an organization. The descriptive survey method was used in the research work. Based on the tested hypothesis, it was revealed that there was a significant relationship between management and workers in the effectiveness of flow of communication in an organization and that there was a significant relationship between management and works of an organization. Finally, it was recommended that organization should be readily equipped with modern technological information system in order for them to meet the challenges abounding the organization.

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1      Background of the Study

The human concept to persuade, instruct, request, present, inform, stimulate, or develop and understanding result to communicate which denotes both interaction and purposefulness (Okpeodua, 2003)).

Communication plays a vital role in the daily activities of every organization. It is regarded as the life wire of an organization. Any organization regardless of its size must carry out communication to facilitate its affairs. Communication is a par and parcel of every individual. 

A greater part of our working hours in life is spent on communication and without effective communication no organization will achieve any meaningful success. This is because human being is the course of working in an organization, interacts with one another; it is through interaction that activities take place in an organization.

Communication is used as a means of sharing feelings, ideas and desires. It is a link between what is inside and what is outside. Without communication people will be isolated, unable to share through wishes, needs with one another. In fact, it is the communication between people that work up the organization, if not organization will be a dead one (Oshite, 2003).

In view of the study, we want to look at the effect of communication on the performance of works in an organization by using Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi as a case study.

1.2      Statement of the Problem

The reason why organizations exist is to render services to the society. For the organization to be able to achieve its objectives people are employed in an organization and they must interact with one another in working towards the attainment of the organizational objectives and the essential ingredient in people’s interaction in the organization is communication.

It is the aid of communication that workers are able to work together collectively towards the actualization of the organizational goals. It is in view of this that the researcher wants to look at the effect of communication on workers performance by using Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi as a case study.

1.3   Research Questions

a.           How does management and workers affect the flow of communication in an organization?

b.          How does workers affect the flow of communication in an organization?

c.           How does communication channel pose a barrier to effective communication in an organization?

1.4   Purpose of the Study

The purposes of the study is to specifically determine:

a.           whether management affect the flow of communication in an organization.

b.          whether communication channel pose a barrier to effective communication in an organization.

c.           To ascertain how the problem of bureaucracy in the organization affect the assistance to students, managers and businesses.

 

 

1.5      Statement of Hypothesis

The following hypotheses which are in the null form shall direct the trust of the study:

        Hypothesis One

Ho:  There is no significant relationship between management and workers in the effectiveness of flow of communication in an organization.

        Hypothesis Two

Ho:  There is no significant relationship between management and workers of an organization.

1.6      Scope of the Study

The study is to examine the effect of communication on workers’ performance in an organization. This study covers Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi and it covers a timeframe of 2002 to 2014.

1.7      Significance of the Study

The study will be of great benefits to the following groups.

It will give shareholders insight of the relationship that exists between them and management as regards effective communication.

It creates awareness to management on their responsibility to their workers.

It gives insight to the general public on the effectiveness of communication channel in an organization.

It will act as source of information to other researchers working on identical study of this nature.

1.8      Limitations of the Study

Although this research tries to examine communication and workers performance in an organization using a case study of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi but some difficulties were encountered during the process of carrying out the research work. Some of the difficulties are explained below.

Finance: There was also the challenge of inadequate finance faced by the researcher to carry on adequate research in respect of the aforementioned topic.

Time: There was often time consuming in sourcing for research materials and other relevant information. This, in addition to the above mentioned was a great challenge to the researcher.

1.9   Definition of Terms

1.          Organization: This refers to a structural process in which people interact for objectives.

2.          Management: A field of study devoted to determine how best to attain goals in organization. It is the working with and through individuals and groups to accomplish organizational goals.

3.          Perception: This refers to the way in which people view things in the organization.

4.          Barriers: Barriers may be regarded as the factor that militated against the realization of an objective.
