CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
In today’s fast-evolving digital economy, the demand for skilled ICT
professionals continues to grow, making it essential for educational
institutions to equip students with the necessary tools and resources for
successful career transitions. The Jigawa State Polytechnic School of ICT,
Kazaure, plays a pivotal role in training future professionals, yet students
face challenges such as limited career guidance, mentorship opportunities, and
access to industry-relevant skills.
The Career and Mentorship Platform aims to bridge this gap by providing
a centralized system that connects students with mentors, career resources, and
skill development tools. Designed to address the unique needs of ICT students,
the platform offers personalized mentorship, career counseling, technical
training, and access to industry networks. Through this initiative, students
will gain the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills required to thrive in
their chosen ICT careers.
1.1
Problem Background
The
rapid growth of the digital economy has increased demand for skilled ICT
professionals across Nigeria, yet many graduates struggle to transition
smoothly from academic institutions to industry roles. This gap is particularly
evident at Jigawa State Polytechnic’s School of ICT, Kazaure, where students
face challenges in accessing adequate mentorship, career guidance, and industry
connections that are essential for career success. The ICT curriculum provides
foundational knowledge but often lacks experiential learning opportunities and
exposure to real-world industry practices, limiting students' readiness for the
workforce.
1.2
Problem Statement
Graduates from the Jigawa State Polytechnic
School of ICT, Kazaure, often encounter significant challenges in securing
relevant employment due to a lack of industry exposure, mentorship, and
practical career guidance tailored to the ICT field. The current educational
framework, while effective in delivering theoretical knowledge, does not
adequately prepare students for the practical demands and expectations of the
job market. Consequently, students struggle with limited career pathways,
inadequate professional networks, and a skills gap in both technical and soft
skills necessary for industry success.
