ABSTRACT
This study explains and explores the roles and
significance of second language pedagogy in promoting social justice and
equality in Nigeria. The role of this work is to examine how second language
teaching and learning can be designed to sort inclusivity, equity and
empowerment for the marginalized societies, such that in a multilingual nation
like Nigeria where English is used as a second language and a medium of
communication vastly, pedagogical practices can either bridge or widen social
gaps. Qualitative approach will be adopted in analysing curriculum content, teachers
perspective and learners experience.

INTRODUCTION
1
. 1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Language
pedagogy is simply the teaching and learning of a language. A child has the
innate ability to imitate and acquire knowledge as he or she grows in whatever
environment he or she was born into. The Language the child acquires first
becomes the child’s L1. The child should be able to understand the L1 with good
knowledge of it within the first place of socialization which is The Family. As
the child grows , it get to a point where another language is introduced, as
the L2 . The child struggles to learn the L2 as a part of what is required by
society and this learning process is not innate , it is like a skill .The
proposed Research will have it’s focus as English Language. English has become
a global language and a language of authority in all areas of Society and the
world in general. In Nigeria, Every Citizen needs to have a good and fluent use
of the English Language. It is the void of this that triggers the need for this
research.
The
deficit hypothesis of Basil Benstein gives this research a stance that there is
dire need for it. From not being able to express yourself properly in a serious situation and not having fluent
ability to speak up when need arises . We see the pivotal role of language
pedagogy.
Scholars
argue that definitions of social justice should depend on the context and there
have been many definitions proposed over the years.
In
the book, Social Justice, Criminal Justice, Cyndy Caravelis and Matthew
Robinson cite a definition penned by Toowoomba Catholic Education in 2006.
It
says that social justice is "promoting a just society by challenging
injustice and valuing diversity.”
In
a 2016 article in the International Review of Psychiatry, Dinesh Bhugra,
Emeritus Professor of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at King's College,
London, says:
"Social
justice is aimed at promoting a society which is just and equitable, valuing
diversity, providing equal opportunities to all its members, irrespective of
their disability, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation or religion, and
ensuring fair allocation of resources and support for their human rights.”
One
of the earliest known uses of "social justice" was in 1840 by Luigi
Taparelli, an advisor to the Vatican.
Scholars
believe he used the term to make a case for why poor and disenfranchised people
should be treated the same as others in society.
The
U.N. began using the term "social justice" in the late 1960s,
sometimes interchangeably with "equality" and "equity."
Meanwhile,
other theories of social justice emerged in the late 20th century and early
21st century. These include John Rawls' theory of justice, which argues that
our behavior is influenced by the institutions we create, and Nancy Fraser's
three dimensions of social justice:
Redistribution
(of resources)
Recognition
(of marginalized groups)
Participation
(of individuals and groups)
Today,
most discussions around social justice explore what a "just" society
would look like, and the injustices people face because of factors such as
race, gender, ethnicity, class, religion, age, sexual orientation, and where
they live. This study will further explore the roles language pedagogy will
play in promoting social justice.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Despite
English serving as the official language and major means of communication in
Nigeria, a significant number of the
population lack adequate proficiency in this L2 language. This deficiency in Language, stands as a
communication barrier that leads to social injustice and inequality as seen in
Zira's case. Individuals find self expression impossible at crucial situations
like legal proceedings, educational environment and social contexts. Hence,
they are marginalized, misunderstood and unjustly penalized.Due to inadequate
language pedagogy, Nigerians are limited to opportunities and self expressions
but open to unfair treatments. miscommunication and lack of access. As a
result, there are growing issues of inequality and the principle of social justice
is swept under the carpet. Due to deficiency in Language Pedagogy, there are
high cases of low self esteem. People are unable to communicate their thoughts
or opinions, students avoid answering questions in the classroom because of
inability to articulate properly. These problems require proper investigations
and solutions.
1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

study has the following aims and objectives;

individuals negatively in the society and how to further curb these negative
issues

study of social stratification and inequality.
