ABSTRACT

The interaction between poverty and socio-economic development particularly in the developing countries of the world has posed challenging problems. This problem has obviously presented this countries in a bad taste in the international relations. It is under this premise that this study was set out to ascertain the problems which militates against the harmonious socio-economic cum political relationship between countries in the international community. This is because the inequality existing between the developed and third world countries continues to deepen while the dependency relationship overstretches the widening gap between the economic bloc through the internationalization of the capitalist system. The interaction and dependency relationships' have created challenges to find the root cause of poverty and it’s eradication to the extent that questions are now asked whether poverty is indigenous to Africa or it came into existence as a result of colonization; globalization and poverty taking third world countries as point of reference. It examines the incidence of poverty in Africa in relation to the forces of globalization. The paper critically explores how Nigerian participation in globalization processes can institute plausible strategies to stimulate foundation for economic regeneration and national development. It is the position of this paper that the strategies recommended would stem the aid of poverty incidence in Nigeria particularly and stimulate national socio-economic development.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1            Background of the Study

An emerging trend in international relations since the collapse of the Soviet Union and cold war is the increasing global inter-dependence woven around the regional and sub regional integration, economic and political liberation and free trade. This factor can be attributed. To this development namely:

a.       The growth in science and technology, especially in the definite areas of communication under sterilization and hardwires that have seen to compression of making the world into the global village or global tilefish bowl.

b.       The collapse of the “iron crusading” in 1989 here iron contain refers to the Berlin wall, following the defunct soviet union of openers and economic restructuring. This development however, played into the wading howls of the Neo-liberals who articulately formulated and propagated the ideas of globalization of the world’s economy, culture and the democratization of all its political institutions. The development in information technology and the string, being attached to aid such facilities and dept. restructuring were constituently seen as the major weapons being used in selling the new waves of international relations.

Preceding this stages of globalization the world was divided into two ideological blocs viz the capitalist and the socialist the historical role of the countries of the third world in the globalization process as demonstrated in their historical development, thus Logan the starting point of time per penalization and proletarialization of the third world countries due to the Atlantic trade in human cargoes (slave trade era) and colonial imperialism since then the imperial nations of the world have subsequently called industrialized world have placed knife on the things that hold the world countries together. Nevertheless, events since the collapse of the Soviet Union have left nobody in doubt that the pattern of international relations has become more complex and that communication revolution has reduced the world into a global village. The trend however did not start today, because as one America scho1ar Frederick (1976) has observed way back in the seventies “A new pattern of international politics is emerging” the world is ceasing to locking in which relatively sell sustained sovereign and homogenous nations interact collaborate, clash or make was transnational ties are going in importance while the claims of nations though still increase and intense, are nevertheless becoming diluted the consequences is a new stage of the global process. The fact however remains that the process of globalization seem asymptotic and thus explorative to the third world, for example, the third world countries.

1.2     Statement of the Problem

The harmonization and globalization of the capricious changes of national interest of the whole countries of the world seems to be desideration to world peace.

For instance the world countries not once find it difficult to obtain external factors needed for their collective development, their way of life and developed in strictly disordered and distorted and their resources stolen by the advanced nations. In addition, the industrial sated nations have despite the increasing pressure, to cancel and reschedule the depts. Of the third world countries, they have reamer insisted that the third world countries be dependent of them if they must develop. Therefore, the industrialized countries have been mocking the cow of third world countries without feeding her all in the name of genies globalization.

We are demanded to state these problems of globalization on the third world countries with regards to Nigeria as

(a)     Globalization – an attempt by the industrialized countries to frustrate the third world countries and divert attempting from the pressing problems of third world countries.

(b)     To what extent will the varied composition of the countries inhabit collective actions in the competitive nature of the globalization process.

(c)      What are the possible ways toward especially in coping with challenges of globalization in the 21st century? It’s another way of colonization by media. How to cope with the friend.

1.3     Objectives of the Study

This study has no other purpose but to identify the significance of globalization contradicts third world countries with particular preference to Nigeria. In addition, the work will ascertain whether globalization humpies the globalization of pervasive deprivation and poverty or that globalization of superfluous affluence. The study will also help us to know the impact of globalization on the third world country.

Therefore the overall aim of this work is to critically access the impact of globalization in the new world order in socioeconomic relations of Nigeria and Africa at large.

1.4.      Significance of Study

It is an objective reality that no nation’s state can survive and develop in isolation, yet it is a more fundamental reality that national self-reliance and autonomy is a pre-requisite for a viable global independence. This study therefore intends to look beyond the hitherto predominant, assumption particularly, as most it all of them were invented and imposed on the third world countries by the industrialized countries so as to promote and protect their national interest. Here is was stated that, these third world countries were to co-operate if there must be a peaceful global system with regards to the fact that the process of globalization is a reality, the study has shifted emphasis to co-operation and collective self-reliance. This is response to the dread of new protectionism employed by the nation’s states.

1.5.    METHODOLOGY

The method employed in gathering data for this study is secondary source. Therefore information gathered were mainly for books, journal, magazines documents, newspapers and other exports on this issues in any case as the process by globalization is an unfolding trend in international relations, also gathered data observation in its original place.

The subject matter of this study is contemporary; Therefore, it has been adopted the situation content method of analysis in presenting and

examining the data.

1.6     Scope of Study

This study covers the period 1990 to 2010. The scope is stemmed from the fact that rather than the work been a thoroughly chosen topic is however narrowed down to the socio-economic aspects of globalization, being very important, the realities of the globalization process have felt no observer in doubt “he who plays the piper dictates the tune”. Hence the incited states has become the prison of nations since the demise of it’s rival the soviet union.

1.7.  Limitations of Study

The research is limited owing to some social, political, and economic problems during the period under study. Lack of finance and part lack of cooperation of few of the multi-national corporation firms’ staff makes it impossible to cover all the areas in Nigeria. The extent of the cooperation of the respondents to the interviews and other oral interview and the non-availability of relevant literature books played prominent role in limiting the desire of this study. The research was also dwarfed by poverty of finance and other needed logistic which could have played a direct role towards early completion of the work, but the entire desire was negated. The Nigeria academic condition and educational stress cum unrest also negated the hope for early completion of the study. All this, however, formed a great limitation to the desire of this study.
