Drug abuse is a social problem that has unfold and expanded rapidly in our educational institutions in particular among the undergraduate college students.

In Nigeria, this social mal-edition is considered a trouble of serious problem because it adversely influences the lives and overall performance of college students involved in addition to harmonious functioning of the entire shape of the society. Drug abuse and different associated issues are towards the survival and effective function of human societies.

Drug abuse among the global adolescent population has turn out to be a serious trouble affecting every country. Addiction leads many younger prominent human beings into downward spiral of hopelessness that during some cases ends fatally. Over the ultimate decade, the hassle of young people’s health has been many of the most vital and complex ones for Nigeria. Excessive drug use amongst college students are related to unfavourable instructional and health consequences and dangers to non-public safety.

In recent times, there has been a rise within the use of medicine amongst Nigeria students in tertiary institutions. Despite being a major public health subject, there are few researches that examine the prevalence of drug abuse amongst college students of various tertiary establishments. The use of drugs for social instead of prescribed medical reasons has been nicely documented. Several works have stated that young humans are ruining their lives thru the misuse of drugs. A assessment with other countries famous that Nigeria ranks the various highest customers of dangerous drugs inclusive of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, benzodiazepines, cocaine and opioids. Almost all types of pills are available in Nigeria due to their spill over into the streets in Nigeria because of their spill over into the streets from drug traffickers who use Nigeria as a behavior to transport tablets from South East Asia and South America to Europe and North America.

Tertiary institution students constitute the largest proportion of the youthful populace of this country. Youth is regarded as the period between adolescence and early adulthood. It is a length of adolescent crises, attempt for self-identity and the desire to experiment. It is likewise the length whilst parental steering seems now not to be enough and the impact of peer is most felt. The desire to explore, test and are searching for abstract answers to issues has been shown to be partly liable for the excessive prevalence of drug abuse said in those age group.

The incidence of health volatile behaviours related to illicit drug use has attracted developing international recognition. Especially in Nigeria, unsafe sexual behaviours can also have notably untoward consequences thinking about the excessive HIV occurrence estimates. Unfortunately, youths may additionally underrate the damaging outcomes of unhealthy lifestyles style. These unpleasant youthful sports are considerable in Nigeria and all over Africa, hence giving a lot of problem to the authorities and general public. Drug abuse remains a main health mission all around the world (UNODC, 2005), Halady (2003) describes drug abuse as immoderate and continual self-management of a drug without regard to medically or culturally suited patterns. Odejide (2000) perspectives that a drug is stated to be abused when its use isn't always pharmacologically necessary in particular whilst it’s used in face of felony prohibition.

Drug abuse may additionally lead to organized crimes and disruption of normal instructional programmes. It has led to increased mystery cult activities in most Nigerian organization which has been a supply of chance to lives and properties (Aluede, 2000). The impact of drug abuse among college students in tertiary group has additionally been associated with the loss of our societal values and ideas. Majority of college students in tertiary institutions ignorantly rely on one form of drug or the other (together with tobacco, Indian hemp, cocaine, morphine, heroine, alcohol, ephedrine, madras, caffeine, glue, barbiturates and amphetamines) for their diverse every day activities (Oshikoya and Alli, 2006). Maithya (2009) discovered that the not unusual motives for drug abuse among tertiary group students in Nigeria are in the main out of curiosity and acceptance via friends (peer pressure). Ndom and Adelakun (1996) argued that male children from an unstable circle of relatives were related to high hazard of drug abuse.

Drug abuse is the number one motive why many youths and college students are incarcerated, as well as a source of crime and health trouble in our society these days. It has become unprecedented problem in Nigeria that the number of teenagers and college students incarcerated in numerous prisons across the US has elevated dramatically over the last few decades. As a remember of fact, majority of these youths were arrested for drug offences or have a drug trouble. Some of the factors contributing to this arrest are the public recognition of the threat in drug abuse and the ‘warfare on pills’ declared with the aid of the federal authorities using numerous groups like the NDLEA, NAFDAC etc. However, since the year the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was set-up in 1999, frantic efforts are being made to collect relevant statistics on drugs thru style of drug signs for coverage formulation. The impact of those groups in terms of intervention strategies and manage is tremendous.

The world today is witnessing an upsurge of problems which might be of globally dimension, as an instance drug abuse, human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, surroundings degradation and pollutants etc. The issues including drug abuse heralded an unending choice in our nation to sensitize her citizens especially tertiary institution college students of the evil of drug abuse which has reach alarming stage.

Clinical findings suggest that cannabis abusers are often younger Nigerian men, youths consisting of students who've been deprived of parental supervision and heat from infancy. Despite the effort of many concerned bodies to shrink this menace, many corporations and individuals still present those tablets as though they may be harmless which often lease irrational youths into drugs and alcoholism. Drug use among younger humans and students in tertiary establishments ought to be count of problem to all Nigerians specifically the government, school heads, the leaders of diverse religious businesses and different NGOS. This study therefore geared toward establishing the prevalence of drug abuse amongst students in tertiary institution using Yaba College of Technology as a case study.
