CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Some authorities in area of leadership rightly opined that if you surveyed one hundred (100) executives working in a wide variety of jobs or organizations and you ask them to name the single most important factor in determining organizational success, chances are good that many would reply, “effect or good leadership style” (Baron and Greenbery, 2021). The assumption by most people is that, without effective leadership no organization can achieve its goals. The twenty-first century witnessed multiple challenges for leadership especially in the areas of organizational achievement. Obi [2003] views leadership as one of those concepts which has as many definitions as there are people who have defined them. Kiemen (2016) stated that leadership requires that one not only occupies a position with formal authority over others but also that one possesses the art of welding influence over others. In the College of Education Warri  leadership has several implications for management. Leadership is the exercise of authority and making of decisions (Dubin, 2019).

Leadership is the initiation of a consistent pattern of group interaction directed towards the mutual problems (Hempill. 2014) a process of influencing the activities of an individuals or group in efforts towards accomplishing goals in a given situation (Heresy – Blanchard 2017).

Leadership then appears to be the capability and actual processes or actions which are attributed to leaders; leadership style is the forms of this particular study and well defined by three authors. The underlying needs - structure of the individual which motivates his behavior in various leadership situations leadership style this refers to the consistency of goals or need over different situations; (Fielder; 2020).

Your leadership style is the consistent patterns, of behavior which you exhibit as perceived by others, when you are attempting to influence the activities of people (Heresy – Blencherd, 2017). By the term style we generally mean a relatively enduring set of behavior which is characteristic of the individual regardless of the situation (Stogdil, 2016).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The ultimate goal of College of Education Warri  is to train Professional Teachers. A training that shall lead to the award of Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) realize these objectives, the provost, registrar, bursar, librarian, directors, deans and head of departments as leaders have to understand the multi-face and be able to put in place that leadership style that can elicit this optimal performance.

Leadership style has significant effects not only in small businesses but also in world largest corporations. These styles affect everyone from senior management to the newest college intern. They create the corporate cultures that influence the organization & its performance.

A leader that is seen as autocratic, oppressive, unfriendly and arrogant can never motivate any worker for high performance.

Another pitfall of leaders is subjective evaluation of subordinates. When objectivity is thrown to the dustbin, there is bound to be misunderstanding. A leader is bound to start with problem right from inception if his appointment does not follow due process. For instance, the position of the provost is by appointment by the governor, from amongst three recommended person not below the rank of a reader by council of the college through the ministry of education. If for any other reasons a person who is less qualified is catapulted to the seat, dumping the rightful candidate, workers will never be fully at home with such arrangement, it will affect their performance.
