Preface
Industry staggers and stumbles in confusion like a drunken man and finally gives way under the heavy burden of economic recession. Factory closes shop because of the high cost of production. Jobs are lost and the rank of the unemployed swells to a breaking point. The man of god sits at a corner, smiles hoping to exploit a cursed generation to his own advantage.
That is the situation in a kingdom that has abandoned its own. The leaders have taken flight, cruising around the world in the most expensive cars, hopping into the flying machines to have fun in the most expensive cities of the world.
Meanwhile, the man of god back home is feeding fat on the people. He exploits their anguish and pain to further torment them. The man of god is found at the street corners promising uncommon blessings that would come the way of the giver while elevating the devil above the Saviour they preach to cow or scare them to do his bidding. The man of god is decked in the most expensive, spritely flowing gown (agbada) and sometimes in custom-made suit, tie and shoes to match. He beats his chest “My God is not a poor God.”
They are all casualties, the rich and poor. The man of god seizes the new craze; Tele (radio) evangelism where miracles are hawked and bought to ply is new found love and the people fall flat. No one, not even the regulatory authorities, dare say anything so long as God’s name is mentioned. In the kingdom it’s a taboo to even think of peeping into the holy of holies to find out if truly God is present in their worship.
Young, rich and upscale Smart Iyase who, by hook or crook, has made it big becomes a target. The man of god is the General Overseer of Abundant Water Church, non-denominational he insists. Smart is unsettled and figuratively consumed by the sugar-coated mouth of the G.O, short form of General Overseer, during one of the outreach crusades stage managed by him warning the rich to protect their wealth. “There are cankerworms and leeches within your families who want you dead so that they can inherit your riches.” He warns the assembly through the loud speaker powered by a small generator tucked away at a corner, in a kingdom where public power supply is a scarce commodity.
Smart is desperate to keep his wealth, even seeking the spirit of the dead in the evil forest, consulting mediums for fear of the unknown. The G.O cannot guarantee him absolute protection from his imaginary adversaries created by the man of god himself. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge because thou hast rejected knowledge; I will also reject thee… (Hosea.)
The man of god too is fighting to put food in his empty stomach. He breaks away and multiplies
by the day because there are no jobs. He finds solace in religion the thriving industry where fewer people are engaged at almost no cost; at least their reward is in heaven while the investor smiles to the bank. He spits out strange doctrines to consolidate his position threatened by the multiplicity of G.Os fishing for men for heaven. Cruel wolves would not spare the flock and teachers of pernicious doctrines will be on the rampage.
Having tricked many in the name of God to part with their hard earned money the flamboyant G.O flaunts his ill-gotten wealth before his congregation, “God has blessed us with a jet, and we
all should celebrate. Come forward and donate generously in thanksgiving to God for his kindness, you will never lack.” He assures the gathering of gaily dressed men and women who have come for the cross-over night worship. Snatching food from hungry mouths and giving them to the dogs, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. It is useless, says the Preacher.
