           CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The students industrial work experience (SIWES) is one of the accepted skills training program which form part of the approved minimum academic standard in various degree programs for all Nigerian higher institutions. It is an effort to bridge the gap existing between theory and practice of any aspects of the filed study. The scheme also affords students the opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that are usually not available in their institutions.

1.1 BACKGROUND

The industrial training fund (I T F) was established in the 1971 as a major manpower development agency of the federal government of Nigeria, especially to provide various facilities for development of skill; manpower particularly in the industrial and commercial sectors of the economy.

The degree number 47 of the October 1971 which established the I.T.F was one of the government policies through which is hoped to transform the economy of the nation from its predominant dependence on foreign expertise to the state of selfreliance the training and development of Nigeria that will be competent enough to perform the specialized skills required to manage the essential sectors of the nation’s economy. Consequently the student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is aimed to provide students with adequate practical exposure in the related field of discipline.

The scheme also provides and equip student with adequate skill they required during their course such that when they graduate they can fit into any organization in the related field of discipline.

1.2    OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

       Specifically, the objectives of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) are to:   

1.    To provide an avenue for students in Nigerian higher institution to acquire industrial skills and experience in their field of study.

2.    To provide student with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real practical work situations there by bridging the gap between higher institution work and actual practices to facilitate the full realization of SIWES objectives.

3.    It exposes students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machines that may not be available in the institution laboratory. 

4.    To provide student with working experience they are likely to meet after their graduation.

5.    To make transition from higher institution to the work place easier and contact for later job placement.
