ABSTRACT

The exponential growth of internet users and digital services has led to an increased demand for efficient and secure network management. This project presents the development of a Network Traffic Monitoring System designed to provide real-time insights into data flow, detect anomalies, and enhance overall network performance. The system utilizes packet sniffing and traffic analysis techniques to monitor inbound and outbound network activity across connected devices. By capturing and analyzing network packets, the system identifies bandwidth usage, potential threats, and unusual traffic patterns, thereby assisting administrators in making informed decisions. The implementation leverages open-source tools and custom scripts for efficient data logging, visualization, and alerting. With its user-friendly interface and robust analytical capabilities, the proposed system offers a cost-effective and scalable solution for educational institutions, small businesses, and enterprise-level networks. The result is improved network security, better resource allocation, and minimized downtime, making it a critical tool in modern network management.

CHAPTER ONE


1.1 Background of the Study

Network monitoring is the process of constantly monitoring the computer network for problems such as slow traffic and component failure. 

Network monitoring is a critical IT process to discover, map, and monitor computer networks and network component, including routers, switches, servers, firewalls, and more,

Network monitoring is of different types. Some of them are;

1.     Fault monitoring 

2.     Log monitoring 

3.     Performance monitoring 

4.     Configuration monitoring

5.     Availability monitoring

Network monitoring helps you to identify issues beforehand, it reduce financial issues by alerting you about issues at real-time.

 A Network Monitoring System is a collection of software and hardware tools that track and monitor a network’s performance and health.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

M & S Global Investment had just installed a LAN to connect offices and devices to share resources and improve organizational performance. However the network use to fail from time to time and there is a need to know what is going on with the LAN and a real-time report of threats and problems is needed.

Henceforth, a network monitoring system software is needed to provide the administrators with a dashboard to monitor and respond to problems instantly. This will improve overall organizational performance and moves M & S Global Investment forward.


1.3 Objective of the Study 

This project aimed to design and develops a network traffic monitoring system for a fictitious M & S Global Investment.


1.4 Scope of the Study  

This project will be delimited to M & S Local Area Network monitoring.
