This research tried to study the effect of biology
practical skill on the achievement of biology student in some selected senior
secondary schools in Akwanga Local Government Nasarawa State in Nigeria. The
study attention was centred only to five senior secondary schools in Akwanga
Local Government Area. The result showed that many students achievement in
biology such as imitate there teacher behaviour, handling of specimens gently
the way their teacher handle the specimen or communicate in the laboratory and
some other student learn observation, curiosity and prediction.

Practical biology is the scientific study of
the life and structure of the plant and animals and their relative environments
in real or experimental set-up rather than dwelling in the theory and idea. The
biology practical utilization of newly acquired knowledge or experience as
well, the study of practical biology student will be able to demonstrate both
theoretical and practical mastery of biology.Students may also choose to
specialize in a particular field within biology. Biology is a practical
science; practical are not just and fun. They also enable students to apply and
extend their knowledge and understanding of biology in novel investigative
situations which can aid learning and memory and stimulate interest. Opuh, E.
(2008) his preamble to the international senior secondary certificate
examination syllabus west official examination council WAEC (1998- 2003)
buttresses that is a need for biology practical in teaching and learning of
biology in the secondary school. The syllabus was designed to assess candidates
in understanding of the structure and function of living organism as well as
appreciation of nature National policy on education (2004) defined secondary
education as the education children stage. Basically, on the academic
performance, Obidiwe (1992) stated that the objectives of practical biology are
not being realized to a satisfactory extent.
He pointed out that the poor academic
performance were caused by lack of well-equipped laboratories, lack of
qualified science teacher limited time allocated for practical, poor
observation, poor drawing and labelling, poor comparison of specimens etc, the
poor state of affair is disturbing. The study therefore intends to examine
effect of biology practical in effective secondary school in SSS two Student of
biology.
1.2 Statement of the
Problem
Many have expressed concern about the problem
faced by most of thebiology students in secondary school.Such problem included
insufficienttraining, inadequate facilities and inappropriate language of
communication. It has been observed that for many years secondary school
student use to havemassive failure in their biology examination both terminal
and school leavingexamination (SSSCE). The problem of teaching biology are not
recent issues but have existed since the introduction of the subject in the
school curriculum.The major complaints of biology always associated with the
behavior aredetermination of the class by the student alone inappropriate
language ofcommunication discovery the student from their lesson. As a result
of the researchertherefore, aim at biology with regard to proficiency
achievement ofthe student in the practical biology and at the end suggests
possible solution for effective teaching and learning.
1.3 Significant of
the Study
Any venture into the problem of teaching and
learning step further in the advancement of education. Therefore, this study is
expected to be of help to practical student in the laboratory. It is also hope
that it will motivate them to be more creative and more interested in the
science so as to make the teaching and learning of the science lively at all
time. In addition, also it is hoped that thesurvey would help the school
administrator and the policy make in Nasarawa state and the federation at large
to improve their services to the schools if the recommendation by the
researchers will be implemented. Moreover it will also help in understanding
various problem, affecting the teaching and learning of practical biology in
the laboratory so as to make necessary corrections as the future of our youth
depends on the background we are able to provide for them to developed.
This research project is limited to some
selected senior secondary schools in Akwanga local Government of Nasarawa state
in Nigeria. The study cannot cover the entire state due to the time factor and
the financial problems. The study is also limited to biology.

find out if there is any difference between the behavior displayed by males and
females biology student during biology practical.

find out how the teacher behavior affects the achievement
of biological to the biological students.
The
study will answer the following research questions:

What is the behavior of biology students during practical
biology?

What is the differences between the behavior displayed by
males and females biology practical student.
3.
What effect does the teacher behavior have on the student
achievement in biology students?
1.7 Research Hypothesis
i.
There will be no significant difference in the behavior
displayed by biology practical students in SS two.
ii.
There is no significant differences between the behavior
displayed by males and females biology practical students in SS two.
iii.
Student achievement of biology practical is not dependent
on teachers’ behaviour.
