ABSTRACT

Since we are having a vibrant mobile phone market in the country and with this market focusing in Lagos, Abuja and Porthacourt, the research project seeks to create an online warehouse that combines the function of distribution, transportation and sales into one functional platform thereby making mobile phones available to anybody, anywhere and any corner of the nation.

The primary goal of this study is to design and implement an online warehouse/store that will serve the distribution of phones.

This project deals with developing an online warehouse for phones. It provides the users with a catalogue of difference phones available for purchase in the warehouse. In other to facilitate online purchase a shopping cart is provided for the user. The system is implemented using PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) script and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) for the web design and MYSQL as the database.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Warehouses are place of storage of goods until the consumer want them. But gradually with the improvement of transportation and communication people can now go directly to the manufacturer to get goods. The manufacturer are gradually taking away the roles of the middlemen but still some problem do exist such as trying to bridge the gap between the consumer and manufacturer as in the case of distance, timing, delivery etc.

But with the advent of the internet a new use as being discovered for the warehouse a use that bridges manufacturing, distribution and sales bringing the three platforms together on a single encapsulating platform namely the INTERNET.

The internet has given birth to the specialized warehouses which are called online stores. Example of well specialized warehouses cum stores includes eBay, Amazon, Banana republic etc.

For the case of study, it is noted that some product with ranging diversity do not have specialized stores such as mobile phones. Practically everybody uses a mobile phone because of its so many advantages such as it cut communication expenses, transportation cost and many iminet advantages. With more than fifty million lines in use in Nigeria alone we can as well say Nigeria has a vibrant mobile phone market so having online warehouse makes a valid economic sense that deals specifically on mobile phones.

 

1.2      STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Since there is a vibrant mobile phone market in the country and with this market focus in Lagos, Abuja and Porthacourt. The research project seeks to create an online warehouse that combines the function of distribution, transportation and sales with one functional platform thereby making mobile phones available to anybody, anytime, and at any corner of the nation.

 

1.3      AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main aim of the study is to design and implement an online warehouse that will serve the distribution of phone for anybody, anywhere in the country.

The objectives include:

1.     To eliminate inconveniency generally suffered by the customer

2.     To reduce transportation cost

3.     Prompt delivery of goods

4.     To meet standard and environment friendliness

 

1.4      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is meant to design and implement an online warehouse with particular reference to a phone warehouse.

The project would be useful to all manufacturers that deals in the sales of phones, not only will it be of benefit to the manufacturer it will also be of benefit for other researches in the future for references purposes.

 

1.5      SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The research project covers the design and the implementation of a simple online warehouse/store site. It deals only in prices of popular and establish phone brands in Nigeria it doesn’t really highlight the individual features or pictures of the phones. It can also classify the phone base on their main characteristics or features. The project also tries to create a payment system for sales for the wanted phone device(s).

 

1.6      METHODOLOGY

This project deals with developing an online warehouse for phones. It provides the user with a catalogue of different phones available for purchase in the warehouse. In other to facilitate online purchase a shopping cart is provided for the user.  The system is implemented using PHP script and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) for the web design and MYSQL as the database.

Middlemen: A trader buying goods from manufacturer and selling to consumers

Shopping cart: a computerized automatic cart that consumers use in ordering items

Online: A service, operation or feature  available through electronic  connection to a computer or communication device

Real-time: This refers to an application where the computer response is received immediately, so a user can make a decision at the time the result is received

Structural programming: A method of program development that makes extensive use of abstraction in order factorizes the problem and give increased confidence that the resulting program is correct.

Object oriented programming: A programming technique that combines data abstraction, inheritance and dynamic type binding.

Operating system: Basically a collection of routines, usually software or firmware, used in overseeing the input, and output processing of a computer system
