ABSTARCT

This research work was carried out on attitude and practice of people toward solid management at Kiyawa local government area, Jigawa state, the sample size for the study is two hundred (200). Instrument used for data collection is structured questionnaire data collected where analyzed using chi-square method. The result is showing that inefficient municipal solid waste management system may create serious negative environmental impact like transmitted dease, land and water pollution.The study also revealed that government funding can assist towards improper dumping of solid waste in the area of study, it also revealed that the people in the are of study should be mobilized on the proper refuse disposal in the area of study; conclusively, thus study has tried to explain the attitude and practice of people toward solid waste management in Kiyawa local government area, Jigawa state. The researcher also recommends among other that provision of proper refuse management equipment should made available in the area of the study; also, and that proper community mobilization should be done to create adequate awareness among the people at the area of study.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION


1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The World Health Organization, WHO (1983) defines waste as something, which the owner no longer wants at a given place and time and which has no current or perceived market value. Solid waste is the unwanted or useless solid materials to the owner generated from combined residential, industrial and commercial activities in a given area. It may be categorized according to its origin (domestic, industrial, commercial, construction, or institutional); According to its contents (Organic material, glass, metal, plastic, paper etc), or according to hazard potential (toxic, non-toxic, flammable, radioactive infectious etc).

Viewed refuse as the collective name for the component part of solid waste, domestic and industrial which may so found in human environment. The issue of waste according to (Sani, 2005) has become one of the major national and international problem in which the government, people and other organization have much concern and was a, serious problem in Nigeria due to the fact that improper waste disposal create a serious damage which tend to ruin the living environment to dangerous and unsafely one.

As a result of increasing waste generation from our daily industrial activities and lack of commitment from people, organization and government toward proper treatment and disposal of solid waste, it gives room to environmental degradation ranging from land pollution,  water pollution, air pollution, aesthetic, nuisance and other associate problem of environment. Management of solid waste reduces or eliminate adverse impacts on the environment and human health, supports economic development and improved quality of life. The management of waste has always been a problem in industrial, commercial and general environment.

Disposal of waste has been identified as being almost every as a problem. It is the first problems which must be discussed in any community because the success of any other health measure introduce will depend largely doing every with the waste disposed the considering its effect on health and environment.

      As such this research hope to find out the attitude and action of people in Kiyawa Local Government Area on waste, and its precisely solid waste management

1. 2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Solid waste management is an essential component of environmental health. Solid waste has to be manage properly in Kiyawa Local Government in such away that the environment should be kept clean and tidy. Dispite the awereness being made by government and other agencies for the proper management of solid waste in the area for healthy living, the people of Kiyawa Local Government show negative attitude and action toward solid waste management which lead to degradation of the environment such as environmental pollution and outbreak of diseases.

In view of that, this research aimed to assess the attitude and action of people toward solid waste management in Kiyawa Local Government Area.


1.3 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study is limited to Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria.

 

1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to find out the attitude and action of people of Kiyawa Local Government Area with regard to solid waste disposal and management.


1.5 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

1.5.1 Aim

The aims of this research work is to determine the attitude and practice of people toward solid management in Kiyawa local government area, Jigawa state.


1.5.2     Objectives of the Study

These objectives of this research work are:

1.To assess the level of awareness of people of Kiyawa Local Government about solid waste management.

2.      To find out whether solid waste generated is properly disposed at appropriate place

3.      To determine the effectiveness of solid waste management.


1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research of this nature will be useful to so many organizations both government, local government health development, world health organization (WHO) UNICEF, institution of higher learning, health institution, and other individual in their day to day activities.

            1.8              OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS

Attitude:- The behavious that the people show when acting on issues or problem surrounding them.

Solid Waste:- The unwanted and useless solid materials to the owner found in the human environment.

Management:- The manner of controlling or taking care of the problem on board.

Action:- The effort people do toward managing or controlling or taking care their problem.

Garbage:- is refuse which comes from the bedroom and kitchen of a house like organic waste, cloth, paper product e.t.c., where trash is all other waste which does not come from bathroom and kitchen like furniture, junk garden and lawn trash, house hold hazardous waste e.t.c.

Rubbish:- trash rubbish, or refuse is waste material that is discarded by humans, usually due to a perceived lack of utility. The term generally does not encompass bodly waste products, purely liquid or gaseous waste, nor toxic waste products.

Practice:- the doing of act something again and again in order to learn or improve Ballet takes a lot of practice. A regular event at which something is done again and again to increase skill soccer practice.

Knowledge:- knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of some one or some thing, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning. Knowledge can refer to a theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.

Waste disposal:- the collection, processing, and recycling or deposition of the waste materials of human society. The term “waste” covers both solid wastes (refuse, or garbage) and sewage (wastewater).
