THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF UNEMPLOYMENT ON THE ECONOMIC LIFE AMONG THE YOUTHS IN OFFA LOCAL GOVERNMNET AREA OFFA, KWARA STATE

ABSTRACT

Not much have been done on the academic circles to study unemployment as a social problem. It is this lack that motivated the researcher to be able to identify this topic; causes and effects of unemployment as it affect the economic life of people among the youth in Offa Local Government Area as one can see in chapter one.

In chapter two, the researcher try to look at the handwork of some writer as review by them. What all these writers has written as pertaining unemployment. How they view at unemployment at their perspective view. The types causes, and its effects on the people.

In chapter three, the researcher identify the target population especially the graduate and those people presently in the field work, in the four wards selected. The sampling technique, used by the researcher which are of paramount important are the four wards that is Essa, Shawo, Ojomu and Balogun wards. Simple percentage is also used to administered the questionnaire.

In chapter four, researcher make the presentation of major finding and the most prominent of which are that although unemployment appears to be a universal phenomenon it character and effects appears very under spread and devastating in Nigeria society with economic and political instability.

Finally, in chapter five, the researcher made some recommendation and suggestion as how to reduce the rate of this ever reaching social problem which affect the economic life of people in man. Primary among these recommendation and suggestion is that there should be a match between the establishment of industries and the setting up of primary and post primary educational institution in the area, and that federal government should cautiously pursue and give vocational and technical education the priority so as to provide knowledge and skill to individual to enter into occupation of their choice to reduce unemployment respectively.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Unemployment has been a major problem in our society. It has becomes a universal phenomenon and its effect are spreading like a wild fire in Nigeria society with visible socio-economic and political impact. It has made some people especially the youth to resort to robbery, drugs addition, prostitution, duping, political thuggery and to exhibits attitudes of touts. 

Educationally, it has affected academic pursuit of youths who may have it in mind to further their academic goals, but were left confused with crimes as the only alternative to expand their real energy.

It is these pressing problems that ignited the researcher to choose the topic “The causes and effect of unemployment on the economic life of youths in OFFA LGA of kwara state” where the researcher Study unemployment as a social problem.

This project is an attempt to study the nature and dynamic of unemployment in relation to the causes and effect on the economic life of youth in Offa LGA. The high rate of unemployment has resulted in socio-economic crisis in the society. The alarming rate of graduate unemployment in Offa LGA can be traced to influx of people to the town in search of greener pastures. 

The researcher discovered the key factors affecting unemployment in Offa LGA is Mismanagement of national resources, absence of industrial policy, manners of recruitment, bad leadership, political instability, bribery and corruption, over population and economic recession at alarming level.

Unemployment in Offa LGA has caused a lot of social problem despite the fact that so many area of employment opportunities in shop, offices, factories, restaurant and public services in general are there, but yet the number of people competing for them always outweigh the vacancies. The attraction in the area are going to make a living, and end up roaming about the street of the town.

Unemployment situation has led some people in the area into crimes such as stealing, duping, kidnapping, raping, political thuggery, prostitution and internet fraudsters. Which is the order of the day in the town and the country at large.

This project look at some of the causes and effect of unemployment in Offa LGA. It is primary to alleviate the economic effect of unemployment and reshape it. The educational planning to enable students acquire skill for self-employment.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Unemployment as a social problem has become an invariable feature in Nigeria. In many states such as Nigeria the rate of unemployment has been very rapid especially after the collapse of the first republic. The study being report is an attempt to study the nature and character of unemployment in Offa Local Government Area. The main problem in perspective and the one with which we are concerned here is that there are thousand o people in Nigeria, able and willing to work but who are unable to find job. What is more is the problem of unemployment manifesting itself in many dimensions increasing magnitude associated in the crises of unemployment are the twin effect of armed robbery, corruption and similar social malaise.

In view of this, the researcher wish to contribute his own quota to the wealth of knowledge and as such has decided to critically examine unemployment in Offa LGA, causes, effects, consequences and remedies.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

It has been the researcher belief that one of the duties facing any research student is to be able to identify a social problem and it is expected that social scientist should fulfill this role effectively. One major problem besetting our societal progress is unemployment. Its effects have become endemic as they are destructive and should therefore be tackled earnestly and conscientiously so as to, at least minimize if we cannot eradicate its phenomenon, that is to say, it is assumed that the study will give on insight to the unemployment problem in Offa LGA, so that the people and government will find the information contained in this study very useful for the benefit of the local Government Area and other areas of the state that have similar problems.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCES OF THE STUDY

Every research topic is intended to solve some problem of significance to the topic. The significance of this study is to find out the causes and effect of unemployment in Offa Local Government Area and provides some solution to the problem. The study has to make a comprehensive analysis of the Nigeria’s social problem-unemployment. The study has it’s looked at both the conceptual and theoretical factors of unemployment. The future looks very black for the young Nigeria who are in search of job which are non-existing. So far, much has been written on the topic but in a rather in disjoined from and it is my intention to collect most of this disjoined information into a unified form. As well, this was essential on effort generated from the researcher’s curiosity about the magnitude of unemployment in our society.

I will examine the general and remote causes of unemployment, it effect on the society in recent years and make some suggestion on how to ameliorate or reduce the incidence of unemployment to manageable level which is another significance of the study. Useful recommendation were to advanced to take care of the problem thrown up.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is limited to Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State. There is no need claiming that the study is problem free when problem abound. Although the topic of the study has a focal point, it is broad in term of treatment. And because of it’s broad nature, it has involved so much travelling with it financial commitment in an attempt to reach the sources of data spread over different part in Offa.

This research work would concentrate on the unemployment problem in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, but due to financial constraint and time factor, the researcher limited to some few wards in the town, and some of the major street within the town.

1.6 HYPOTHESIS 

This study has been premised on the following hypothesis:

1. That unemployment is under spread in Offa Local Government due to endemic nature of socio-economic and political crisis in our society arising from poor planning and environmental mismanagement.

2. That unemployment phenomena has apparently excavated the tempo and dynamics of such society evils such as armed robbery, prostitution and social violence

3. That unemployment cannot abate as long as we generate within the same work of economic arrangement that lack adequate planning and hamour proliferated setting without any definite prospects

4. That only a proper re-organization of the economic realities in which an adequate educational planning with employment prospects can Offa unemployment problem reduce.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

UNEMPLOYMENT - This refers to a condition whereby one is able and willing to work, but unable to find a job. Unemployment may manifest in many forms depending on the magnitude.

SOCIAL PROBLEM - This is any situation which is regarded by a significant number of member of any society as threat to one or more of the group basic value and which is believed to be remediable by collective actions.

CYCLICAL UNEMPLOYMENT - By cyclical unemployment, I mean unemployment that is linked to changes in the level of economic (business) activities.

ECONOMICS - It is the social science that deal with way in which men and societies seek to satisfy their material needs and desires, since the means at their disposal do not permit them to do completely.

CAUSES -This is a person, event, or thing that makes something happen.

EFFECTS - The way in which events, action, or person changes someone or something’s.

GRADUATE – A person who has successfully completed a course of study or training 

MISMANAGEMENT – The process of managing something badly.
