ABSTRACT

 

This project is on the comparative study of Cholera Cases and Death in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano in Kaduna State, Nigeria. It involves the study of cholera, causes and transmission, control and preventive measures. The data used in this study is a secondary data and is collected from epidemiological unit of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano. Test of significance is the statistical tool of analysis in this project. It was observed that Kano State suffer the problems of water supply, poor health care services and poor sanitation.

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

 

1.1    INTRODUCTION

According to Taylor (1997), cholera is part of Asia, particularly in endemic in epidemics occur from time to time in other countries such as Peru in 1992, which was the first break in South America of the twentieth century. In 1991 more than 160,000 people died weird and wide from half a million cases of cholera. Cholera is the best known and most feared of the diarrhea diseases. Although it is diarrhea in terms of total morbidity or of the world continuous to cause dramatic out breaks of acute disease accompanied by considerable loss of life. In other areas cholera is a part of the over all spectrums of endemic diarrhea and in this situation if often occurs regularly with seasons.

 

Cholera is one of the most feared epidemic diarrhea disease because of its severity dehydration and death may occur within a short period of infection Ferdinand C. (1892) a German botanist who published a classic book one bacteria is often considered the father of modern bacteriology stated “cholera as diseased cause by vibro-cholera”. In the course of this investigation with collaboration of procedure for providing a particular microorganism is the cause of a particular disease.

 

Cholera is caused by backteria infection of the small intestine. The disease begins with sudden pain from the bowel, as it progresses vomiting may start together with muscle cramp due to how blood pressure levels. If not treated may become rapidly dehydrated pass into shock and lead to death.  The organisms which causes cholera is a shape motile bacterium called vibro-cholera. The main source of infection is contaminated water.

 

1.2    SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study covers only cholera infection cases and death on children in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano from year 2001 – 2010.

 

1.3    OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

        The aim and objectives of the study are stated as follows:

                     i.        To find if there is relationship between the total number of inpatients and cholera cases on children

                    ii.        To determine the degree of relationship between the total number of inpatients and cholera cases one children

                  iii.        To conduct forecasting for four years

                  iv.        To find if there is relationship between the total number of inpatient children death on cholera cases

                   v.        To determine the degree of relationship between the total number of inpatients and children death on cholera cases

 

1.4    DEFINITION OF TERMS

                     i.        Epidemic: Is a situation in which a disease spreads rapidly a large number of people and later disappear again.

                    ii.        Endemic: The describes a disease which always present at a low level in a given population or region.

                  iii.        Signs: Visible expression of the disease which can be found by examining a patient.

                  iv.        Carrier: A person who has been infected but develops on signs or symptoms and passes the disease; a disease which must be reported immediately by doctors to the health authority due to its seriousness.

                   v.        Symptoms: Is on indication of a disease which is not detectable by examination and can only be reported by the patient.

                  vi.        Treatment: Is a measure taken of cure a disease or alleviate symptoms once a person has the disease

                vii.        Morbidity: Deals with illness and injuries, incapacity, hospitalization etc.
