CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study

Electronic commerce is emerging as a new stimulus to economic development for developing countries. The world around us is rapidly advancing due to the development of information and communication technologies. Globalization and industrialization have largely impacted the growth of international markets. Growth of internet has enhanced business opportunities as online marketing is easier for the customers as well as the sellers. It is cost efficient and easy to handle.  Virtual setup is required in e-commerce to market goods and services. No need of spending money on a real setup. History of electronic commerce is less than 20 years. Its rapid growth in the previous years has attracted even academics in various fields. Although e-commerce is welcomed worldwide with great enthusiasm, there is still a wide gap in adopting e-commerce between the developed and developing countries like Nigeria. To meet the fast changing demands of the national and international markets, it is a necessity nowadays to be well updated with the world of e-commerce. It is the quickest means to reach a large group of people including investors, marketers, traders, etc.  It has been accepted by the government and the academic officials that proper adoption of e-commerce by SME’s can change the status of any nation from developing to developed nation. Business through Networking is also flourishing under the system of electronic commerce.

Nigeria being a developing country started to adopt technological growth only after the year 1999 which quite later as compared the developed countries like U.S.A, U.K, etc. The subject of e-commerce is still a new one for the country like Nigeria. E-commerce includes online shopping, online banking, providing online marketplaces, online trading, participation in online marketplaces, advertising, etc. Internet banking is one of the areas of e-commerce that has spread its wings in Nigeria. Nearly all banks provide online services. Use of ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) has led to the adoption of e-payment technology in Nigeria.

SME’s have become the leading contributors to the national and international economy in the last decades. They are the backbone of any country's advancement as they are ones who generate fruitful capital and provide employment opportunities to people. This proves that growth and development of these small and medium enterprises are highly beneficial for the advancement of a nation. Use of ICT and internet which has given rise to e-commerce by SME's will lead to a prosperous economy of any nation.   As compared to the developed countries SME’s in developing countries are slower to adopt e-commerce.  Around 90% of the total business, establishments are compiled to be known as SME's. These enterprises can take their business to new heights by adopting this new technique.

There are lots of researches on the SMEs of developed countries but this assessment will have a look at the factors affecting and the extent and factors affecting the adoption of e-commerce by SME’s in Kaduna Nigeria. The above primary review leads to the following research question:

Research question 1: What is the extent of e-commerce adoption among SMEs in Kaduna Nigeria?

Research question 2: What are the factors that could be hindering e-commerce among SMEs in Kaduna Nigeria?

1.2     Objectives of the Study

The first objective of the research is to study the extent of e-commerce adoption among the SME’s in Kaduna Nigeria.
