ABSTRACT

Growth Monitoring is the process of following and assessing the growth rate of a child in comparison to a standard by, periodic, frequent anthropometric measurements. Only a ew have been said and researched about the maternal knowledge and attitude towards growth monitoring and its associated factors in Owerri Municipal and Mbaitoli Local Government Area. This study was conducted to determine the knowledge, perception and techniques adopted by the mothers in assessing and monitoring growth and development of under-five aged children. Methods: Community based cross sectional design was adopted for this study. Sample size was 175 (p=11.7) after correction and proportional sample size allocation was used to allocate the sample to the 2 locations and Systematic random sampling was used to select households. Data was collected using semi-structured questioners by interview and the obtained data was analyzed using SPSS v.20.0 statistical software.  Statistical significance was declared at P-value of 0.25 for bivariate and 0.05 for multivariable logistic regressions. Results :Under-fives sampled were 175.Youngest child were 2years and above(64.6%)age(months),youngest child were  less than 2years of age(35.4%)age(months), (68.6%)attended post natal clinic,(30.2%)did not attend post natal clinic,(65.1%)completed the immunization(32.6%)did not complete immunization, male comprised(53.7%) female(45.7%),(20%)monitored key motor milestone of a child correctly(9.7%)did not monitor key motor milestone of a child correctly,(92.0%)did not know how to use the growth chart,(76.0%)knew person’s should carryout growth monitoring. weight/height(30.9%)obesity, while(2.9%) sSAM(severely wasted(<-3)B.M.I Age(46.3%) Overweight, while (3.4%) severe (<-3) believed that growth charting in childhood was important (p=0.03.) Conclusion and Recommendation: Mothers have relatively good attitude than knowledge. Formal education, counselling and education from healthy professionals and a formal occupation had a positive impact on knowledge and attitude towards growth monitoring. The knowledge status of the mothers was found to below.

CHAPTER 1

1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Growth monitoring and promotion of optimal nutrition are essential components of health care for all children. Monitoring a child’s growth helps to confirm a child’s healthy growth and development, or identify early a potential nutritional or health problem (Pediatric Child Health, 2010).

Growth monitoring is defined as the process of following the growth rate of a child in comparison to a standard by periodic, frequent anthropometric measurements in order to assess growth adequacy and identify faltering early. It is not the infrequent or one-time anthropometric measurement of a child to assess nutritional status without assessing growth velocity over time. It is a regular and sequential measurement of growth, recognizing it to be the result of overall health, nutrition, environment, psychosocial and developmental factors in the child and it is based on a strategy aimed at behavioral change and adoption on improved self-help action within the family and the community to promote optimal health (Griffiths and Rosso, 2007). Growth Monitoring is a screening tool to diagnose nutritional, chronic systemic and endocrine disease at an early stage. It has been suggested that growth monitoring has the potential for significant impact on mortality even in the absence of nutrition supplementation or education.

Growth monitoring is widely accepted and strongly supported by health professionals, and is a standard component of community pediatric services throughout the world (Khadilkar et al., 2007)

There is a growing realization that a healthful diet particularly in the first few years of life are of paramount importance in laying the foundation of good health (Anyango and Ayeieko, 2011). However, these areas commonly have received little development support.

1.2  STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Lack of co-ordination: A great deal of coordination is necessary among the government and all medical and non-medical personnel working directly with under-five age group to ensure a smooth implementation. Government should reallocate resources and raise awareness to the importance of child growth monitoring and redesign their surveillance systems to enhance good decision making on adequate monitoring by empowering trained personnel, providing them with resources and necessary support to develop and strengthen programmes to deal with the growth problems and implementation of standard. There should be feedbacks on the actions taken. Caliber of Personnel: Many health personnel lack adequate knowledge on growth monitoring thus it should be incorporated into pre-service training programmes for medical and nursing professionals. They should be well trained on the concept of growth monitoring and promotion. The training package should emphasize on the importance of accurate measurement, plotting and interpretation of growth charts for correct identification of growth problems and also, other personnel working in close contact with this age group especially mothers should be health educated on growth and factors affecting proper growth and development.

Resource constraints: Under-staffing in primary health care facilities and shortage of equipment is an important factor that cannot be over emphasized as it impedes a successful implantation of growth monitoring (De Onis et al., 2012).

1.3 GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To determine the knowledge, perception and techniques adopted by mothers in assessing and monitoring growth and development of under 5 children in Mbaitoli LGA and Owerri Municipal in Imo state.

THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY WERE TO:

i.          Determine the socio-demographic/economic characteristics of mothers of under 5 children in the study areas.

ii.         Assess the knowledge of the mothers in the study areas on growth monitoring and development of under 5 children.

iii.        Assess the perception of the mothers in the study areas on growth monitoring and development of under 5 children.

iv.        Determine the techniques adopted by the mothers in assessing and monitoring growth and development of their under 5 children in the study areas.

v.         Assess the growth and developmental status of the under 5 children in the study areas using the WHO indicators.

vi.        Determine the relationship between the mothers' knowledge, perception and techniques and the growth and developmental status of their under 5 children.

1.4       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This work provided:

i.          Relevance of monitoring growth and development of under 5 children in selected rural locations in Imo state.

ii.         Promote growth and and development of under 5 children, There is a growing realization that a healthful diet particularly in the first few years of life are of paramount importance in laying the foundation of good health (Anyango and Ayeieko, 2011).

At the end of the study, suggestions and recommendations will be made on some factors that affect successful knowledge, perception, and techniques adopted by mothers of under 5 children in selected Mbaitoli LGA and Owerri Municipal in Imo state.
