ABSTRACT

Effective evangelism has declined ever since, evidently by the wide and high level of unrepented persons among all races of the earth.  The Lord Jesus, the Christ, came and died for the redemption of humanity, several hundred years ago, yet only very negligible persons have heard or believed abut His vicarious death for us all.  Even the region of the world where the Apostles of the Lord, and disciples, talked, laboured and suffered martyrdom in the bible days, and in the earlier years, for instance in the Asia, Minor, North Africa, Arabs has been completely taken over by Moslem, and other world religions.

Unfortunately the nations like Rome, England U.S.A which profess Christianity have the majority practicing pseudo-Christianity like Catholicism, minimalism and Christian occults e.t.c.  And even Israel are still very obstinate sliff – necked and engrossed in their Judaism, Shunning Christ the only hope of glory.

Evangelism is the Heartbeat of the Lord Jesus Christ therefore, there is only one thing to engage in, which is evangelistic outreach of all sought, whether by campaign or crusade, seminar, media, literature, missionary etc targeted at the urban, villages, sects, cults, riverine, areas, prisons, remand homes, the youth, children, and other unreached people groups.  Yet it is another thing for this to be result oriented and rewarded truly with the adequate fruits.

The response has been that of rejection, passivity, antagonism, indifference, apathy, sensuality, mere changing or conversion to other places of worship but not conversion to Christ.

Power evangelism otherwise known as prophetic evangelism has been known to be more fruitful since the inauguration of the kingdom of God by the Lord Christ Jesus Himself at the sermon on the Mount (Matt Chapters 5:6,7).  The Lord’s Great Commission says to all of us His disciples, And He said unto them Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.  And these sins shall follow them that believe, in my name shall they cost out devils they shall speak with new tongues they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:15-16).

CHAPTER ONE

1.0    INTRODUCTION

Evangelism is the zealous preaching and dissemination of the gospel, as through missionary work.  Evangelism in Christian tradition can never be overemphasized as a vital tool for propagating the gospel.  Evangelism comes with the great commission given by the Lord Jesus Christ to his disciples, that they should spread the faith to all the nations of the world.  Hence, it has become a tenet in Christian Theology emphasizing mission work and evangelism.  It has been a primary basis for Christian Missionary activity.

The gospel according to Matthew (28:16-20) reads “Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.  When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.  Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (NIV).  This instruction implies that His followers have the duty to go, teach, and baptize.  Athough the command was initially given directly to Christ’s Eleven Apostles, it is also directed to all Christians of every time and place.

According to C.S Lewis “the salvation of a single soul is more important than the production or preservation of all the epics and tragedies in the world”.  Therefore, every Christian has been commissioned to evangelize the gospel of Christ.  Now, this study focuses on Evangelism as a vital tool for propagating the gospel of Christ in an attempt to fulfilling the great commission as instructed by Christ before His    ascension into heaven.

1.1    STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

There has been misconception about evangelism.  Many Christians do not know what evangelism entails.  It is a controversial issue among many theologians.    At the time our Lord Jesus Christ gave the Great commission, the world population was around 250 million; but over four (4) billion as at now.  The disciples then around 120 were said to have “turned the world upside – down” Acts 17:6.  The Christian population of the moment stands around 1 billion, yet no impact is felt because the meaning of evangelism is not clear to many.

It is high time Christians are enlightened about what evangelism is as a responsibility of every Christian.   Often than not, evangelism has been labeled as the work of an evangelist alone.  But this is not what Christ intended when He gave the great commission.
